The Senior Research Associate in Cell Line Development is responsible for mammalian cell line development, construct development, cell line characterization and stability testing, single cell cloning, as well as optimization of processes and assays.

The Senior Research Associate possesses knowledge of scientific principals and concepts in fields of cell biology, protein expression, molecular biology, and/or antibody engineering, and has experience with cell culture (specifically CHO cells), ideally including stable and transient transfections, clone screening, small scale bioreactors, and DNA cloning and PCR. Experience with microbial expression also desirable.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performing upstream processes including stable and transient transfections, selections, clone isolation, screening, scale-ups, and fed-batches in shake flask.
  • Developing and performing small-scale bioreactor runs for cell growth and protein production.
  • Performing molecular biology including recombinant cloning and preparation of expression vectors, RT-PCR, and other standard molecular biology techniques.
  • Performing antibody and other protein quantitation and assessment using Octet, SDS-PAGE, western blots and other techniques.
  • Assist in data analysis related to upstream processes and assays and experimental outcomes.
  • Assisting in research, product, and process development for current and novel work.
  • Participating in maintaining capabilities, databases, laboratories, equipment, and supplies in the areas of protein engineering, cell biology, and cell line development.
  • Writing R&D protocols, SOPs, reports, and other product development and R&D documents.
  • Supporting Manufacturing and other departments as needed.
  • All other tasks as needed or assigned by supervisor.

Preferred Experience, Education & Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate should have a BA/BS in molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering or related field plus at least 4 years industry experience or MS plus 2 years industry experience.
  • Background in mammalian cell culture including CHO suspension cultures and in mammalian cell line development.
  • Experience in process development and/or manufacturing.
  • Strong writing, analysis, and communication skills including both oral and written.
  • Ability to work in teamwork environment.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
  • Must have excellent organizational, planning, and attention to detail skills.
  • Candidates must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident to be considered for this position.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential function of this job. The employee will perform testing using equipment placed on work benches, will need to be able to work at the lab bench for the entire work day, and must be able to use both hands and use all digits. Adequate eyesight is a must for operation of the equipment. The safety system includes audible alarms. Adequate hearing is therefore a requirement. Must be able to use the required safety equipment such as face masks, respirators and gowning.

This job requires the employee to perform the following type of physical work:

  • Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the employee sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

This job requires the following visual acuity requirements:

  • preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
