We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to provide technical expertise to the design and development of complex hardware pertaining to novel sequencing platforms. This position will involve working within a collaborative team environment to design, prototype and test hardware solutions to meet product requirements. In this role, the individual will contribute to product development process by driving design documentation around test verification and risk management. The successful candidate should possess a strong aptitude for creative design, be resourceful, detail oriented, and work comfortably within a cross-functional team environment. Ideally the candidate has experience with semiconductor capital equipment, laboratory instruments or similar products


  • Research, concept generation, development, design and detailing of mechanical subsystems and components
  • Analysis and optimization of mechanical subsystems through form, fit, function, tolerance stack, risk management, prototyping and benchtop testing
  • Collaborate with Engineering functions on instrument design including subsystem bread board design, prototyping, and testing
  • Support of instruments build and installment of designs to ensure compliance with engineering specifications
  • Collaborate with external partners and vendors in design, sourcing, and timely delivery of parts
  • Engage with manufacturing and service teams to enable overall best user experience for subsystem design
  • Generate detail drawings for manufacturing and inspection of parts
  • Design and develop tools, fixtures, process to assist in the product and systems development.
  • Generate clear summary of subsystem test results linking results to subsystem requirements
  • Ability to interface with manufacturing team to effectively transfer product from development to production


  • Minimum BS in Mechanical Engineering with 5 or more years of related work experience
  • Experience in manufacturing processes: Rapid prototyping, machining, injection molding, sheet metal, etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical engineering design principles and practices - Form, fit, tolerance stack analysis, GD&T, drafting standards, FEA, design for assembly, design for manufacturing, etc.
  • Ability to interface with external vendors and contract manufacturers to ensure high quality designs are properly documented and transferred to fabricate instrument hardware subsystems
  • Experience with thermal analysis and thermal systems is a plus
  • Proficient in 3D modeling software - SolidWorks required
  • Experience with PDM and revision control systems
  • Strong hands on experience and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working with product development processes
  • Working experience of sequencing and/or medical devices is desired
  • Ability to design to regulatory compliance and risk management using tools like FMEA
  • Demonstrated skills in complex problem solving
  • Acts independently to develop or improve mechanical methods and procedures


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
