Sr. Director - Corporate Strategic Finance

Join a newly created team focused on putting the company's growth and long-term vision at the heart of the finance function. The Corporate Strategic Finance team is responsible for leading the consolidation of the Long Range Plan (LRP) and corporate valuation workstreams as well as strengthening our enterprise capital planning, monitoring M&A performance post-acquisition, and driving major initiatives to grow revenue, reduce expenses, and manage P&L volatility. This position will work across the Finance organization as well as partner with strategic planning teams in Commercial, Development, and Corporate Strategy. This position reports to the Head of Corporate Strategic Finance and will be based in Foster City, CA.

This individual will be an integral member of the Corporate Strategic Finance team and must have a strong track record of strategic thinking leveraging rigorous financial analysis, distilling insights into clear and cohesive executive presentations, and influencing senior leadership to act on key recommendations. This individual must be a self-starter with the ability to effectively navigate ambiguous situations in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Essential Duties & Job Functions

The Corporate Strategic Finance team is responsible for the following activities. Specific job duties will be defined as the team is built out.
  • Lead process and consolidation of Gilead's Long Range Plan (LRP) and Corporate Valuation workstreams, ensuring tight integration across Gilead's strategic planning processes.
  • Leverage benchmarking and peer analysis to pressure test LRP forecast assumptions and outputs
  • Partner with Treasury on an integrated financial strategy to support the corporate strategy driving tradeoff discussions across internal investments, M&A, and shareholder return
  • Evaluate and recommend enterprise-level opportunities to drive revenue growth, manage P&L volatility, and reduce expenses
  • Increase expense transparency to drive more informed decision making
  • Increase rigor of enterprise capital planning process to approve new capital projects and oversee ongoing projects
  • Monitor macroeconomic trends (inflation, commodity pricing, labor rates, etc) and establish cost standards for capital projects
  • Ensure robust financial analysis for large capital planning projects including potential for tax optimization
  • Partner with Corp Ops and HR on geographical footprint and site strategy
  • Evaluate M&A deals post-acquisition, comparing to pre-deal model to understand key drivers impacting ROI. Capture lessons learned to improve future pre-deal models
  • Refresh and maintain financial models to support quarterly IPR&D impairment analyses

Knowledge, Experience, & Skills
  • The successful candidate will possess a minimum of 12+ years' experience with a BA/BS, 10+ with an MBA, having held positions of increasing scope and responsibility
  • A BS or BA is required, and an MBA, CPA, and/or CFA is a plus
  • Top tier consulting and/or investment banking experience are a plus
  • Understands complex financial statements and valuation models
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills including forecasting and financial modeling capabilities
  • Able to craft and deliver clear, cohesive presentations for executive leadership and Board of Directors
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to lead, resolve conflict, and drive consensus among individuals from a variety of cultures and disciplines
  • Able to handle competing priorities in a fast paced and dynamic environment and have a “roll up the sleeves” attitude
  • Comfort and experience tackling ambiguous, complex problems
  • Significant experience in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry with demonstrated cross-functional collaboration and leadership
  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint
