The Director of Commercial Biologics Manufacturing reports to the Manufacturing Site Director and sits on the Manufacturing Site Leadership team at AbbVie Bioresearch Center (ABC) in Worcester, MA.  The leader provides overall direction of two independent large scale 6,000 L manufacturing suites and Core Support organizations including: Cell Culture, Purification, Weigh and Dispense, Media & Buffer Prep, Glasswash and Change Management. The leader directs Business Unit Associate Directors, managers, supervisors and technicians across multiple shifts.  The manufacturing director is accountable for production, quality, safety and financial performance of the operation, which predominantly delivers commercial batches and also delivers clinical manufacturing for AbbVie and third-party products. ABC is the AbbVie Center of Excellence for Biologics, and the Commercial Manufacturing Director develops and shares best practices and standards with other AbbVie Biologics sites.

 

Responsibilities:

•Direct all operational and financial goals and objectives for a 130+ person manufacturing organization including: cell culture, purification and core support operations across multiple shifts and the change management team for manufacturing.
•Drive and lead two independent 6000L manufacturing areas to meet the site business strategies and to deliver 100+ batches per year and $90MM+ in absorption, while accountable for operating expenses, payroll and capital expenditures for manufacturing area projects and programs.
•Direct and lead the Core Support manufacturing areas for the entire plant which includes 3 additional 1000L to 3000L scale manufacturing suites, cell banking and ADC.
•Coach and lead the associate directors of Business Unit 1, Business Unit 2 and Core Support and their teams to develop and implement strategies for state of the art processes that improve the quality of products and reduces cost of manufacturing. The manufacturing director is responsible for driving strategies and improvements for the plant which delivers 200+ batches and 25+ New Product Introductions per year.
•Direct teams in troubleshooting manufacturing issues. Provide technical leadership and training to efficiently produce the highest quality products. The role is accountable for the Productivity Index and Scheduling Index within the Perfect Index.
•Collaborate with other Functional Directors including, Clinical Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Engineering and Strategic Operations to deliver on Plan and LRP objectives while driving contamination elimination and other continuous improvements across the organization.
•Guides and delivers site strategies, action plans, timelines and budgets for project and product goals.
•Drive a Culture of Quality, Safety and Performance across all manufacturing areas.

•Bachelors Degree: Engineering or other technical field.  Masters Degree: Technical discipline, Master of Management or Master in Business Administration, preferred
•10- 15 years experience in Biologics Manufacturing or Engineering Management
•10+ years’ experience including: work as an individual contributor building technical expertise and proved project management skills. Progressively increased responsibility and performance as supervisor, department manager and leader of diverse teams in multiple areas of Operations (Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain , Engineering etc)
•Demonstrated technical leadership in biologics processes and new product introductions
•Experience in leading the Product lifecycle from clinical to commercial phase, gaining regulatory approval, managing regulatory changes and driving yield and quality improvement
•Experience in directing large teams of exempts and non-exempts in a multi-shift and multi-product biologics operation
•Significant financial acumen coupled with functional leadership experience is required to ensure strong leadership and direction to a complex operation
•Must have demonstrated organizational and planning skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills
•Must be able to effectively facilitate the resolution of complex scientific, technical, analytical and business issues across functional lines
•Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with executive management
