What you will do

In this vital Senior Scientist role, you will be part of the fast-paced, integrated and interactive department of Biologics Therapeutic Discovery with responsibilities including, but not limited to the discovery, design, preparation, analysis, and screening of novel compounds for potential clinical drug development. This will include the opportunity to work within Amgens RNA Therapeutics group, which is focused on innovative approaches to design and deliver RNA to modulate intractable targets in unmet medical conditions.

  • The Senior Scientist will work as part of the RNA Therapeutics team responsible for developing RNA design, characterization, and testing strategies.
  • Design and optimize processes for the analysis of mRNA in vitro transcription (IVT) products, including devising mRNA IVT by-product analysis and purification strategies.
  • Responsible for characterization of RNA post encapsulation in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs).
  • Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: Implementing creative scientific strategies to address therapeutic RNA challenges through conducting laboratory experiments, working closely with other researchers to influence team direction and advance programs, communicating progress and strategy in various forums, and preparing technical documents.
  • Interact directly with researchers within RNA Therapeutics, the Research Biomics Group, and multiple Therapeutic Areas to optimize mRNA translation through transcript design, modification, production and LNP-mediated delivery.
  • Serve as a scientific resource to the department who will champion new technologies/ideas to enhance capabilities.
  • The Senior Scientist may directly or indirectly lead research associates within a collaborative environment and be responsible for technical training and professional development.

Basic qualifications
  • Doctorate degree and 2 years of mRNA analysis, characterization, or purification, pharmaceutical research experience, or equivalent experience OR
  • Master's degree and 5 years of mRNA analysis, characterization, or purification, pharmaceutical research experience, or equivalent experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree and 7 years of mRNA experience, or equivalent experience with additional RNA analytics or pharmaceutical research experience
Preferred qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a similar field
  • Candidates should have a strong background (2+ years) in mRNA characterization including expertise in traditional large molecule analytical techniques
  • Experience in lab scale analysis of IVT mRNA transcripts and mRNA-LNP formulations
  • Proficient skills in purification and analytical characterization of RNA
