Job Description


Gilead is seeking a highly motivated and creative Research Scientist (RS) with expertise in virology and immunology to take a leading role in its Clinical Virology group supporting drug development for a functional cure of chronic HBV/HDV. The RS will be responsible for managing translational and clinical studies, developing new assays to characterize drug resistance and investigate the mechanism of action of new inhibitors. The successful candidate will also conduct document writing for regulatory submissions, prepare publication/ presentation of results. In addition, he/she will be the virology lead for ongoing HBV and HDV clinical studies.

Essential Functions:
  • Support the development of new therapeutics for HBV, HDV, SARS-CoV2 and other viruses.
  • Build novel phenotyping and sequencing assays to support clinical development of antivirals.
  • Develop biomarkers for novel HBV cure modalities including new antivirals, targeted and immune-based therapies.
  • Identify and lead relevant external collaborations in areas applicable to HBV/HDV cure.
  • Lead virology monitoring and characterization of drug resistance of antivirals in the clinical development via managing testing at CROs or by testing clinical samples in house using internally developed assays.
  • Contribute to regulatory submissions by writing virology reports and working closely with bioinformatic team of virology data submission.
  • Build and maintain close interactions with Gilead R&D groups and relevant functional areas.
  • Represent clinical virology on cross-functional teams for new and ongoing HBV/HDV clinical trials.


Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
  • PhD or equivalent degree in virology or relevant scientific discipline and a minimum of 2 years of post-doctoral experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of virology, molecular biology and immunology preferred. Previous experience with deep sequencing or phenotyping assay is a plus.
  • A strong applicant will have extensive skill sets in cell biology, molecular biology and assay development.
  • Strong motivation, independence, and ability to work in a high-pace multidisciplinary environment with minimal supervision.
  • Goal-oriented and effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to think independently and fully integrate into a high achieving team environment.
