Moderna is seeking an experienced leader and epidemiologist to assume the leadership of the epidemiology group in Infectious Diseases. A PhD in Epidemiology is required, with specific experience in pharmacoepidemiology studies highly desirable. Leadership and excellent communication skills are a must, as this role will have substantial requirement to work across functions and lead through influence to deliver a comprehensive operational study plan for development programs in the infectious disease portfolio. At least 10 years of industry experience is required, preferably within vaccine development.
This role will report to Modernas Therapeutic Area Head for Infectious Diseases, and will be the primary point person for the strategic development and execution of the Epidemiology Plans for the infectious disease projects. Approximately 10 program epidemiologists will report to this position. The position is based at Modernas Cambridge, MA or the Bethesda, MD site.
The successful candidate is driven, curious, collaborative, with a bold ambition to contribute to the development of ground-breaking mRNA-based vaccines. Ability to develop strategic plans within the observational study space is a clear requirement for the role.
Heres What Youll Do:
Manage and develop a team of epidemiologists supporting a broad portfolio. Develop team capabilities in observational and Real World Evidence studies, pharmacoepidemiology, and cross-sectional and longitudinal studies.
Build strong collaborations with partner functions, including Medical Affairs, Pharmacovigilance, and Commercial.
Accountable for the leadership, development and execution of the Epidemiology strategy in the infectious disease portfolio.
Help design the structure and assess the needed capabilities for Modernas developing Infectious Disease franchise in the Epidemiology area.
Provide scientific leadership to the Epidemiology, Infectious Diseases team.
Design and manage the team execution of Phase 1-4 observational studies, including post-marketing pharmacoepidemiology plans and Real World Evidence studies.
Develop contracts and site selection practices with key epidemiology partners in the external environment.
Sit on the Infectious Disease Therapeutic Area Leadership Team and assist the Therapeutic Area Head in developing overall development strategies for programs in the infectious disease portfolio.
Help establish policies and procedures for key Epidemiology activities, ensuring compliance with the principles of Scientific Engagement.
Actively contribute to the development of Target Product Profiles, particularly in terms of understanding burden of disease, evolving epidemiology patterns, and how this may impact Modernas post-licensure plans and label updates.
Represent Moderna as a key epidemiology expert at public health bodies, such as the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices, National Advisory Council on Immunization in Canada, etc.
Perform burden of disease and pharmacoepidemiology study oversight, including development of protocols, data analysis plans, and study reports and peer-reviewed publications.
Serve as a key partner with Commercial in terms of market-building activities, including building of HEOR models.
Lead the Epidemiology strategy for Advisory Board meetings.
Partner with Legal/Compliance functions to ensure all Epidemiology activities are conducted according to Modernas policies and procedures, and in a manner compliant with all external laws and regulations.
Develop and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with the broader Moderna organization.
Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:
PhD in Epidemiology or Pharmacoepidemiology. Preference given to candidates with previous experience in vaccine development.
Minimum 10 years experience in an industry setting, preferably in Vaccines or a related therapeutic area. Proven ability to:

Integrated understanding of FDA, EMA, ICH, and GCP guidelines. Prior interactions with public health agencies are a must.
