TrialSpark is a technology-driven drug development company that runs end-to-end clinical trials, focused on bringing new treatments to patients faster and more efficiently.

The biggest bottleneck in bringing new treatments to patients is the clinical trial. On average, getting a drug through the trial process takes nearly a decade and frequently costs $1B+. To combat this industry problem, TrialSpark is building a technology platform that optimizes all aspects of a clinical trial, enabling more efficient trial design, faster trial completion, and higher trial data quality.

TrialSpark recently raised their Series C, and is putting the capital to work by in-licensing and co-developing drug programs through in-house development, joint ventures, and NewCos. Together with doctors, patients, and communities, TrialSpark is working to develop the treatments of tomorrow.

About the Position

As an Engineering Manager, you will manage a team of software engineers building features in one or multiple product areas. You will also partner with Product Management and other teams across the organization to help deliver on TrialSpark’s mission. You are an example of what TrialSpark engineering should be, and will be deeply involved in setting the technical and cultural tone of our engineering organization. Ultimately, you are responsible for your team and their ability to deliver high-quality software in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

• Line-manage a team of engineers and see to it that they are able to deliver quality features in a drama-free way
• Build trust by providing technical guidance and leadership to your team and your partners. Function as a tech lead if necessary, but bias towards sponsoring and delegating to direct reports.
• Utilize technical ability to inform resourcing, team composition, and performance management.
• Advocate, empower, unblock direct reports to ensure that the entire team gets results. Facilitate decision-making accordingly.
• Support growth of the team through career planning and skill development.
• Handle minor team issues without escalation, and know how to hold people accountable without pointing fingers.
• Lead through adjusting to changing situations and participate in developing convincing, well-tuned messages to bring others along. 
• Ensure adherence to processes and SOPs, with an eye towards improving them, across the team.

About You 

• Knowledge of one of: Python, SQL, JavaScript, TypeScript.
• Familiarity with Linux-based operating systems, cloud-oriented technologies (AWS, Docker), and PostgreSQL database.
• Strong technical understanding of web-based technologies.
• Exceptional communication skills with the ability to convey complicated systems to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Excellent problem solving and debugging skills.

• Ability to lead a team of 3-7 engineers to tackle complex technical and business challenges.
• 5+ years of experience delivering projects in a software engineering individual contributor role. (You will be coding in your first months here.)
• 2+ years experience in a people management and/or technical lead role.
• Track record of shipping and scaling high-quality software systems as an individual contributor and lead/manager.
• Strong knowledge of at least one programming language.
• Experience with database and command line shell utilities.
• B.A./B.S. in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience
