Reporting to the Executive Director, this role will lead the Creating Possible Fund and other programs for the Gilead Foundation. This position will be located in Foster City, CA (flexible).Gilead Foundation is currently seeking a Program Director to join the team and lead a grantmaking portfolio and strategy across the Creating Possible Fund, a new initiative to advance health equity. The initial focus of the Fund is to advance health prosperity through education equity.Key Areas of Responsibilities:
Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
- Implement a grantmaking strategy aligned with the philanthropic goals and objectives of the Gilead Foundation and rooted in local context and conditions; draft grant write-ups, periodic program reports and briefing papers for internal and external stakeholders; and present strong proposals to internal approval committees.
- Develop strategic and tactical plans to bring Gilead Foundation initiatives to life, with goals aligned with mission and priorities and in close collaboration with Corporate Communications
- Identify potential partners and projects that are consistent with the Foundation's philanthropic goals; review proposals and determine funding recommendations; provide primary program support for the maintenance of active grants including regular communications and problem solving with partners and consultants, report review, analysis and feedback; maintain an open, ongoing relationship with community leaders.
- Lead cross-functional committees and meetings to review grant recommendations; provide updates on grantee progress; determine technical assistance needs of grantees; plan convening, evaluation and communications activities; and share and reflect on experiences in the field and related program activity.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with grantees and nonprofit leaders; communicate the Foundation's philanthropic strategy to multiple internal constituencies; provide local leadership teams with frequent updates about portfolio partners and community priorities; coordinate local presence and leadership involvement in local, state, and regional events.
- Create high-quality written content that conveys Gilead Foundation's mission and purpose narrative, including program and initiative narratives, case studies, impact outcome summaries, blog posts, fact sheets, FAQs, executive briefing materials and presentations
- Ensure we are driving integrated storytelling and editorial themes across social impact and philanthropic communications outlets to tell a cohesive story to internal and external audiences, in close collaboration with Corporate Communications
- Assist in the development and planning of key initiatives, collaborating with a cross-functional team in developing key messages
- Build and maintain close relationships with key partners to help capture the impact of our programs and initiatives, and tell stories that bring this impact to life
- Manage partnerships with select stakeholders to position Gilead Foundation as a thought leader and enable connections and partnership opportunities across the ecosystem
- Bachelor's degree required with 10 years of relevant experience; advanced degree in education, law, public health, business administration or another relevant field strongly preferred or Master's degree with 8 years of relevant experience
- Deep knowledge of public and charter school systems is required; direct experience working with adolescent-age students strongly preferred
- Demonstrated leadership in the education field with significant experience working with leading nonprofit, government and/or philanthropic leaders in the specific context of education equity
- Adept at soliciting and synthesizing various viewpoints, and deep understanding of the connection points between business and social impact
- Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant work experience in philanthropy, especially in corporate foundations, and deep subject matter expertise of the rules and regulations specific to private foundations.
- Passion for Gilead Foundation's mission; deep knowledge of and experience related to health equity and health justice
- Executive presence with an ability to serve as a trusted counsel to leadership and ability to influence without direct authority even at the organizational level
- Outstanding oral, written and presentation skills; comfort in presenting to and interacting with senior executives across the company
- Significant operations expertise and budget management skills
- A collaborative mindset and genuine desire to partner with peers across the organization
- Ability to develop and nurture relationships in an open and inclusive way, serving as a connector between disparate areas within Gilead and the Foundation
- Understanding of grant making and the nonprofit sector; ability to assess the leadership, track record, fiscal health and capacity of a nonprofit organization
- Demonstrated ability to think critically and strategically about program design and implementation
- Commitment to pursuing equity and addressing root causes of health outcomes disparities
