Senior Manager, Environment, Health and Safety (EHS)
  • The role is for a seasoned EHS professional with primary responsibility for occupational, health and safety and oversight of the viral vector manufacturing process at Gilead's site in Oceanside, CA. This role reports directly to the Senior Director of EHS for the campus.


Specific Responsibilities:
  • Provides vision, leadership and guidance in biosafety, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, and injury prevention
  • Works collaboratively with the EHS team to advance the site's EHS management programs
  • Provide day-to-day oversight and collaboration with the viral vector manufacturing, quality control, warehousing, and facilities organization
  • Develops internal standards, procedures and practices for the Occupational Safety Management Program based on best available scientific evidence and professional judgment in collaboration with the global network
  • Develops and maintains the EHS procedures, work practices, and forms associated with the area of responsibility using the site's GMP document control system
  • Performs risk assessments to identify areas of potential exposure and the corrective and preventive actions required to minimize work related injuries or illnesses
  • Use the EHS technology solutions for incident management, inspections, and compliance actions
  • Guide the investigation of injury and near misses and prepare summary report of direct causes and corrective and preventative actions
  • Manage workers compensation claim reporting and follow up
  • Develops and executes EHS training programs use the site's quality training platform
  • Ensures leading indicator metrics and tools are being utilized to reduce risks and prevent injuries and illnesses
  • Leads the site safety team
  • Assists with employee engagement activities including EHS fair and sustainability events
  • Collaborates with the EHS Network to enable development and implementation of company best practice for occupational safety programs
  • Supports senior leadership in creating and implementing mid to long term strategy and operating plans for occupational safety planning at the global and site level


Basic Qualifications:
  • Advanced scientific degree OR
  • Master's degree with 6+ years of experience in EHS or
  • Bachelor's degree with 8+ years of experience in EHS or
  • High School Degree with 12+ years of experience in EHS
  • Ability to travel occasionally to attend corporate meetings and development


Preferred Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required:
  • Advanced knowledge of occupational safety programs and possess active professional certification (e.g., CIH, CSP or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated managerial experience of EHS organizations and people leadership
  • Experience developing and monitoring budget expenditures
  • Familiarity with pharma, biopharma or cell therapy manufacturing practices
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential in this collaborative work environment Comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic, and highly fluid company environment and able to adjust workload based upon changing priorities
  • Able to express ideas and present information effectively to leadership, within team functions, and with external partners
  • Ability to think critically with demonstrated troubleshooting and analytical skills
