The Finance Director will drive portfolio-level financial planning and analysis efforts for the Research function, a ~$600m function that reports directly to the CEO. The successful candidate will be the primary business partner to members of the Research Strategy, Innovation & Portfolio LT. This person will be responsible for demonstrating strong communication, influencing, and strategic thinking skills that will drive our early research and discovery work as we innovate a portfolio of life savings medicines from the lab into the clinic.

This position reports to the Senior Director, Research Finance with dotted line reporting relationships to members of the RSIP LT.

Essential Duties & Job Functions
  • Serve as primary business partner for members of RSIP LT – supporting RFD strategy, resource allocation, planning, and portfolio trade-off decisions
  • Collaborate with RSIP leaders to challenge assumptions and use analytics to enable sound business decision making
  • Lead the LE and Budget cycles and associated scenario analysis for the Research portfolio, with direct oversight for collaborations
  • Responsible for finance support of Research Balanced Scorecard
  • Drive portfolio-level financial reporting insights
  • Develop improved processes for collaboration forecasting
  • Proactively recommend and implement process improvements to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of our reporting and analysis
  • Oversee the monthly and quarterly close process for collaborations, including managing expense accruals, management reporting, and budget vs. actual variance analysis;
  • Lead the quarterly business review process to report results to RSIP and Finance leadership
  • Proactively recommend process improvements to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of our reporting and analysis
  • Provide ad-hoc analyses and project support for the Research LT.


Knowledge, Experience, & Skills
  • The preferred candidate will possess a minimum of 12 years' experience, having held positions of increasing scope and responsibility, including at least 5-7 years' experience as a senior finance leader and business partner
  • A BS or BA is required, and an MBA (with 10 years' experience) or CPA is strongly preferred
  • In-depth proficiency in aspects of accounting and finance and knowledge of US GAAP is required
  • In depth knowledge of US Healthcare Systems, Business Intelligence, Planning and ERP systems is required with proficiency in Microsoft tools
  • Prior experience in bio-tech or pharma is strongly preferred
  • Experience in high-growth, multi-national organization a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: an inquisitive mind, and the ability to work effectively with multiple functions
  • Ability to quickly establish credibility with diverse audiences and be perceived as a leader
  • Business Savvy and Financial Acumen: The candidate will possess technical knowledge on analytics, business foresight, and problem-solving skills
  • Results Orientation: The ideal candidate will be results-driven and must thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. He/She must have the ability to drive results and possess a strong drive to meet and exceed goals and is willing to take ownership of problems and make sound decisions
  • Change Leadership: The candidate will be an independent self-starter and a proactive leader with a drive to strive for continuous improvement and consistently challenging the status quo. Will be viewed by business partners and Finance colleagues as a thought leader with strong, influencing capabilities, who can also maintain open and transparent communication channels
