Intern – Business Strategy, Development Operations (Graduate)

Who We Are

The Portfolio Strategy, Management, and Operations (PSMO) department seeks to ensure Gilead makes informed investment decisions about internal and external pipeline opportunities by maintaining a systematic approach to team structure and leadership, governance, lifecycle management and Development portfolio management – including program status, portfolio long-range planning, resourcing needs and potential impact to long-term revenue. The Business Strategy team primarily focuses on strategic and operational elements, leading and driving business-critical projects and initiatives within the Development Operations group, supporting PSMO and Development at large. In addition, the team also engages in and launches various cross-functional, novel initiatives aimed at capturing high-value business value and transforming internal culture.

Essential Functions:

The candidate will be intimately involved in various functional areas and working groups, with aims to improve operational efficiencies, create new business values, or transform organizational culture within the Development organization. The intern will work as part of a larger team with cross-functional skills and expertise, and may work on the following initiatives:
  • Coordinate, manage and help implement new Clinical Operations initiatives following success of novel Solve-a-thon project
  • Ideate topics for 2022 Gilead Case Competition, brainstorming and developing plan and actual case content
  • Support and/or drive business strategy projects simplifying various Development pain points and enabling changes (e.g., processes, SOPs, re-thinking steps)
  • Assist in various strategic talent acquisition and/or career development initiatives
  • Employ business acumen, strategic thinking, and analytical skills to conceptualize new, high-value initiatives for the PSMO
  • Serve as a creative voice in the Development organization, thinking outside of the box to uncover opportunities for performance and efficiency improvements
  • Support analysis of industry best practices to ensure programs, processes and initiatives are meaningful and aligned to the overall business strategy
  • Support DevOps in building 2-way communications with Development & PSMO
  • Support successful implementation of long-term, cross-functional projects
  • Support Business Strategy team in connecting with broader Chief of Staff network to ensure alignment and realize synergies
  • Ensure presentation success of key PSMO leaders to various stakeholders and partners


Required Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.8
  • Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a Master of Business Administration (MBA), PharmD, MPH or other relevant program at an accredited US based university or college
  • Must be a Graduate or Doctoral Student
  • Undergraduate degree Biological or Health Sciences, Business Administration, or Project Management
  • Experience in devising and implementing business strategies involving quantitative analysis, conceptualization and communication of strategic solutions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to complete 10-12 consecutive weeks between May and September
  • Must be enrolled in the Fall Semester at an accredited university/college after the completion of the internship
  • Must be able to complete a 10-12 consecutive week internship between June and September
  • Must be able to work at our Foster City site for the duration of the internship
  • Must show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination* prior to start of internship
