The Role:

Moderna is seeking a talented and experienced Scientist to focus on mRNA expression and characterization to support vaccine design programs. The goal is to use automated flow cytometry to functionally screen antigen designs to enable selection decisions for mRNA candidates. Experience in mammalian cell culture and flow cytometry workflows will be required to succeed in this role as we endeavor to increase our throughput and develop novel vaccine candidates for multiple infectious diseases (ID). Characterization of protein antigens will also be required to validate reagents for assay development. The candidate will work collaboratively with internal teams to help advance the ID portfolio. The candidate will also interact with and facilitate collaborations with external research partners and contractors. Applicants should be outstanding at lab-based research, a collaborative team member and have excellent communication skills.

Heres What Youll Do:

  • Screen and characterize mRNA antigen candidates in vitro using transfection and antibody binding with flow cytometry read out to detect and quantify expression of encoded proteins and allow prioritization of designs for vaccine development

  • Use your in-depth knowledge of flow cytometry instrumentation, experimental workflows and data analysis to partner with colleagues to develop a high-throughput antigen characterization capability to support ID research objectives this effort will include building automation capabilities to increase throughput at all stages of the workflow

  • Assist team members in purification and characterization of encoded proteins using biochemical and biophysical techniques including FPLC, gel electrophoresis and Western blotting, melting temperature determination, light scattering, biosensor binding studies (BLI & SPR), ELISA and additional assay systems as needed

  • Collaborate and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to rapidly develop mRNA vaccines and therapeutics

  • Generate, interpret, summarize and present experimental data and results at group meetings, project meetings and department meetings

  • Propose and pilot new experimental approaches to accelerate and improve mRNA lead discovery including automation, assay development, instrumentation and integrative data analysis tools

  • Identify new opportunities to contribute to antigen design and evaluation

  • Focus on a specific portfolio segment to accelerate targeted research and method development

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

  • Exceptional PhD in immunology, bacteriology, virology, biochemistry, or biophysics and 0-3 years postdoctoral experience

  • Experience in flow cytometry: experiment design, instrumentation and data analysis confidence and skills to go from idea to data to insight

  • Industry experience (biotech or pharmaceutical) would be an advantage but is not essential

  • Experience with workflow automation and data processing tools is an advantage

  • Knowledge of mRNA biotechnology, bacteriology, virology, vaccinology and vaccine design is a plus.

  • Experience with cell culture and protein science workflows would be an additional advantage

  • Experience with areas such as glycobiology, chemical biology, directed evolution and associated workflows and data analysis would be a further advantage

  • Candidate will be curious in exploring new paths for drug discovery, bold in proposing creative experimental designs and ideas. Will work collaboratively with multifunctional teams and will be relentless in pursuing successful outcomes.

  • The individual must possess excellent data management and verbal/written communication skills, have ability to perform experiments, evaluate and process data, present results in a clear, concise and timely manner, and assist with the preparation of final written reports.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a highly dynamic, fast-paced, matrixed environment with rapidly evolving priorities

  • Ability to assist in mentoring junior staff to achieve scientific and career goals aligned with business objectives

About Moderna

In over 10 years since its inception, Moderna has transformed from a research-stage company advancing programs in the field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across seven modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for rapid clinical and commercial production at scale. Moderna maintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use and approval of one of the earliest and most effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases. Moderna has been named a top biopharmaceutical employer by Science for the past seven years. To learn more, visit www.modernatx.com.
