Job Details

Icagen’s facility in Durham, North Carolina currently has an opening for a talented Associate Scientist to join our Biology team. This is a full-time, laboratory-based position offering an opportunity to play key roles in identifying novel drug candidates and advancing drug development projects. The ideal candidate will have experience in a broad set of molecular biology and biochemistry techniques with a fundamental understanding of cellular biology. The successful candidate will be capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously while working as part of a core team. The work will be fast-paced and process-oriented in a dynamic environment which is predicated upon continuous improvement where everyone is encouraged to contribute to improving laboratory efficiency.

About Us:

Icagen, part of the Ligand family of companies, is a biopharmaceutical company that partners with the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry on drug discovery programs primarily focused on ion channel and membrane transporter targets.

Ligand is a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing or acquiring technologies that help pharmaceutical companies discover and develop medicines. We have contributed novel research and technologies for approved medicines that treat cancer, osteoporosis, fungal infections and postpartum depression, among others. Ligand’s previously announced spin-off of OmniAb, Inc. and merger (Business Combination) with Avista Public Acquisition Corp. II, a publicly traded special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The OmniAb group consists of dynamic and innovative scientists that employ a variety of novel platforms to support our partners in discovering the best antibodies possible for their therapeutic applications. At the core of OmniAb is the ability to engineer animals to generate affinity matured human sequence antibodies for use in conventional and novel therapeutic  formats. We leverage our proprietary animals with state-of-the-art technology in antigen design, immunization methods and high-throughput single B cell screening to facilitate discovery of best-in-class antibodies. We are looking for accomplished team players who are enthusiastic to contribute to the technological frontier of antibody discovery, contribute to improving human health, and passionate in their desire to collaborate with partners to develop next generation therapeutics. See for more details about the exciting science being performed at OmniAb.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Integral member of the in vitro pharmacology team supporting multiple target screening and leading drug candidate optimization projects.
  • Perform molecular biology and biochemistry assays to characterize properties and/or mode of action of drug candidates.
  • Participate in the culture and maintenance of mammalian cell lines.
  • Demonstrate flexibility within a data driven work environment, along with an ability to multitask and good communication and organizational skills.
  • Maintain excellent documentation of protocols and experiments and contribute to analysis and reporting of data.
  • Participate in laboratory support duties that are associated with operating a productive pharmaceutical industry research group.

Experience & Skills:

  • BS in biology or cellular/molecular biology and 0-2 years of relevant experience in a research or drug discovery laboratory environment.
  • Experience in molecular biology and biochemistry techniques (e.g., RNA isolation/handling, qPCR, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, enzymatic assays).
  • Excellent written/verbal communication, record keeping skills with strong attention to detail, and computer and data processing skills (Microsoft Office, SnapGene, etc.).
  • Molecular biology techniques to characterize gene expression including SDS-PAGE, RNA isolation, RT-PCR and qPCR.
  • RNA and protein extraction from cell lines or primary cells for downstream applications.
  • Protein characterization using ELISA, western blot, and immunoassays.
  • Aseptic cell culture techniques along with cell harvesting, counting, cell cryopreservation, and infection/transfection.

The company offers competitive benefits including Medical, Dental, Vision, Short/Long Term Disability and Life Insurance, as well as 401(k) Match, Stock Options, Bonus, and Paid Leave Time.

OmniAb, Inc.’s discovery platform provides pharmaceutical industry partners access to diverse antibody repertoires and high-throughput screening technologies to enable discovery of next-generation therapeutics. At the heart of the OmniAb platform is the Biological Intelligence™ (BI) of our proprietary transgenic animals, including OmniRat®, OmniChicken® and OmniMouse® that have been genetically modified to generate antibodies with human sequences to facilitate development of human therapeutic candidates. OmniFlic® (transgenic rat) and OmniClic® (transgenic chicken) address industry needs for bispecific antibody applications though a common light chain approach, and OmniTaur™ features unique structural attributes of cow antibodies for complex targets.

We believe the OmniAb animals comprise the most diverse host systems available in the industry and they are optimally leveraged through computational antigen design and immunization methods, paired with high-throughput single B cell phenotypic screening and mining of next-generation sequencing datasets with custom algorithms to identify fully human antibodies with superior performance and developability characteristics.

An established core competency focused on ion channels and transporters further differentiates our technology and creates opportunities in emerging target classes. OmniAb antibodies have been leveraged across modalities, including bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates and others.

The OmniAb suite of technologies span from BI-powered repertoire generation to cutting edge antibody discovery and optimization offering a highly efficient and customizable end-to-end solution for the growing discovery needs of the global pharmaceutical industry.
