Job Description

Specific Responsibilities and Skills for Position:

This position is responsible for supplier relationship and performance management as well as sourcing, design transfer and manufacturing at external Medical Device suppliers. This position coordinates between all relevant Gilead functions and supplier functions to ensure supply plans and strategies are executed and achieved per plan. This includes driving performance of the strategic relationship under the direction of the department Director and in conjunction with Device Development and Primary Packaging Engineering (DDCPE) Team, Manufacturing, Quality, and other Gilead functions. This position will be a key member of Medical Device Category Management Team and support implementation and execution of supplier initiatives. This person will work with suppliers and internal partners to measure and drive results and initiatives, and to develop and maintain collaborative relationships. This position will also serve as the production champion for assigned suppliers and will lead the resolution of supply issues and risk mitigation at respective suppliers. This person will support Gilead Supply Chain Management in the development of supply mitigation plans with suppliers in response to critical supply issues.

We are seeking candidates with experience working with drug delivery device manufacturers in a pharmaceutical or medical device organization. The ideal candidate will possess a blend of strategic sourcing and technical expertise obtained working with device development, sourcing, contracting and management of external suppliers. This individual will be a key point of contact between Gilead and assigned external partners, responsible for the overall supplier relationship.

Essential Duties and Job Functions:
  • Serves as supplier relationship manager and key point of contact for assigned external device suppliers.
  • Collaborate with internal functions to develop and refine strategy for management of device development/manufacturing, considering timelines, risk mitigation and business priorities.
  • Leads development and execution of supplier evaluation and selection of medical device suppliers to support assigned projects
  • Leads development, negotiation and execution of supplier agreements, (Non Disclosures, MSA's SOW's, Supply Agreements and quality agreements.
  • Reviews and facilitates approval of proposals, work orders, and changes of scope.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional team to transfer new programs to external partners.
  • Executes strategies that drive effective operational performance and service levels at suppliers. Strong alignment with Supply Chain, Commercial Manufacturing, and Quality is required.
  • Develops, executes and ensures compliance to purchasing control procedures
  • Monitors and troubleshoots key external activities via email, teleconferences, site visits and annual business review meetings.
  • Executes strategies that drive effective operational performance and service levels at external partners.
  • Communicates risks and delays to management and technical leads on a timely basis.
  • Report metrics and resolve issues with external partners in a collaborative fashion and escalate as needed.
  • Supports strategic business and quality compliance processes and changes by participating in working groups and acting as business process owner for system changes as needed.
  • Provides input for budgeting based on outsourced manufacturing needs.
  • Effectively communicate project, performance, and resource issues to management and within project teams.
  • Develops and maintains deep understanding of supplier capabilities, capacity, and risk for assigned suppliers
  • Understand the supplier market and develop relationships with potential suppliers that support Gilead's future needs
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 20% of time.


Knowledge, Experience, and Skills:
  • Ability to influence and work well with others in a proactive and constructive manner.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with all levels of an organization
  • Proven ability to problem solve, build strong relationships, and to organize effectively
  • An independent self-starter with the ability to resolve supplier performance challenges and implement process and/or system improvements
  • Ability to develop, analyze, and leverage key metrics to improve overall business performance
  • Business acumen with an ability to anticipate operational issues and proactively recommend mitigations/solutions
  • Expertise working with Combination products and with domestic and international cGMPs
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and to work across multiple multi-national sites and diverse cultures
  • Demonstrated ability to collaboratively and positively influence suppliers, stakeholders and internal team members
  • Demonstrated communication, presentation, organizational, time management, and change management skills
  • Familiarity with ERP and supply chain systems a plus


Education and Experience:
  • BS with 8+ years of relevant experience in a related field or
  • MBA or MS plus 6+ years of relevant experience in a related field
  • Prior experience managing supplier relationships highly desirable
  • Prior experience working with combination products with drug as the primary mode of action highly desirable
  • Prior experience in pharmaceutical operations and/or Medical Device manufacturing and cGMP environment(s) highly desirable
  • Some travel may be required - up to 20%
