Purpose and Scope:

The Director, Medical Payer Strategy for the Medical Value & Access (MV&A) team sets the payer strategy for assigned brands to optimize patient access. This individual will work closely with MA and Health Systems brand teams to develop, enhance and tailor the medical strategy for multiple payer channels/segments resulting in a clinical, HEOR and real-world evidence driven strategy that they can execute on in the field. The results produced by the Medical Payer Strategy Director should lead to more focused and streamlined field execution, stronger payer value story for assigned brands and ultimately better access for patients

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop the medical payer strategy for assigned priority brands for implementation within the MV&A field team, responsibility for approximately three priority brands.

  • Serve as a strategy lead between the Medical Brand teams, the MV&A field team and the Health System teams.

  • Broad cross-functional collaboration with US Brand Teams, US Health Systems teams, Value Strategy and Access Solutions, Medical Affairs/HEOR, Payer Account Management, Key Account Management, and other key Health Systems and Commercial/Medical functions are critical.

  • The Individual is accountable for developing and evaluating medical strategies and ensure appropriateness for multiple channels/segments including, but not limited to, Medicare, Commercial Managed Care, VA/DoD, TriCare, IDNs, Payer, Specialty Pharmacy, Retail Pharmacy, Distribution/Trade, and GPOs.

  • Accountable for development of actionable plan for assigned products; conducting strategic analysis and incorporating insights from Health Systems and Medical Brand Teams (Clinical, HEOR) to deliver medical value & access strategy and product differentiation in order to maximize payer value story.

  • Provide guidance for HEOR data generation to meet and anticipate payer needs.

  • Ensure the MV&A team has the right resources for execution in the field to optimize patient access to assigned products. Create, edit, facilitate resource creation as needed

  • Incorporate changes to the competitive product landscape, product lifecycle and the payer landscape into strategic process.

  • Work closely with field team and area directors to implement plan for execution on payer brand strategies.

  • Implement other strategic support functions as assigned by Sr. Director, MV&A

Quantitative Dimensions:

  • Accountable for the addition of payer medical strategies into the Medical brand plan and the 3-year value plan to support the MV&A Area Directors with implementation and execution in the field.

  • The Strategy Director will be accountable for managing resources, developing tools and assessing priorities associated with the payer strategy for their responsible brands.

Organizational Context

  • Director, MV&A Payer Product Strategy reports to the Senior Director, MV&A.

  • Matrix responsibilities across therapeutic areas for their assigned products with both field and home office stakeholders.

  • The Director will collaborate with the following colleagues:

MA: Senior Director/Directors, HEOR; Medical Directors; Medical Communication, Area Directors, MSL and MV&A field.

Commercial/Health Systems: Director VSAS for corresponding brands, Senior Directors (field and home office)

Other: Legal/Compliance/Government Affairs

External: Astellas partners, Vendors,

Qualifications Required

  • Advanced degree (PharmD, PhD, MD, DO)

  • Minimum 5 years related experience in a payer or payer facing field-based role

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities in strategic thinking, problem solving, influencing without authority, and decision-making skills in a matrix organization.

  • Proven track record of success being a high-level independent and team contributor to lead multiple projects and processes.

  • Exceptional communication skills in order to present complex issues to upper-level management and contribute to high-level presentations and discussions.

  • Strong collaborative experience in building relationships and influencing internal, and external colleagues across multiple functions (Commercial and Medical).

  • Solid understanding of the payer healthcare environment and formulary decision making process

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Approximately 25-50% travel required depending on location

Qualifications Preferred

  • Strong knowledge of US healthcare delivery systems (e.g., accountable care, managed care, pharmacy benefit management, government [Medicare, Medicaid]) and solid understanding of policy issues

  • Thorough understanding of FDA, PhRMA, OIG, and ACCME guidelines as they relate to HEOR and Medical Affairs

  • Previous brand experience or specialized training in several disease states, particularly oncology.

  • Previous experience developing brand tools and resources
