Sr. Engineer, Process Development

The Role:

Moderna is working to develop first-in-class messenger RNA (mRNA) based medicines. To support this mission, we are seeking a new Scientist/Sr. Engineer to join the DNA Process Development team at our Norwood, MA site. In this role, you will have the opportunity to develop cutting-edge technologies and improvements in our nucleic acid manufacturing processes including oligonucleotide and gene synthesis, nucleic acid purification, enzymology, strain development, and high-throughput, cell-free cloning.

The incumbent will collaborate closely with Modernas process development, analytical development, and process automation teams. The applicant should have strong communication and collaboration skills, along with multiple examples of a strong technical background. The successful candidate must be able to work in a fast paced and highly dynamic environment, will have relevant academic and or industrial experience in large molecule bioprocessing, and will be able to contribute to both process development and automation related activities. We seek applicants that are proactive, enthusiastic, and show a passion for process development. Applicants should have exceptional time management and communications skills with a strong attention to detail.

Heres What Youll Do:

• Independently design and execute experiments to develop and optimize state-of-the-art processes for nucleic acid synthesis that fit manufacturing needs

• Automate optimized nucleic acid synthesis processes (automated liquid handlers)

• Document research and work product, analyze and interpret findings for reports and presentations.

• Identify opportunities for pro-active process improvements and optimization based on commercial performance data to improve robustness of commercial manufacturing process.

• Interface extensively in a matrixed environment with process development teams for process investigation support, assess new technologies, support on-going process characterization and post-approval changes.

• Execute and troubleshoot standard protocols, develop, and adapt new protocols into practice, and query literature to incorporate additional assays as needed

• Mentor junior team members. Supervisory role may be included.

• Generate high quality source documentation to support regulatory filings.

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

• Ph.D. (with 0-4 years of relevant experience), or BS/MS (with 4-8 years of experience) in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemical Engineering, Biology, Biochemistry, or closely related field.

• Experience with complex experimental design, molecular biology techniques, cloning, and primer design. Experience in strain engineering, synthetic biology, and fermentation a plus.

• Ability to plan and execute experiments independently

• Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills

• Creative/innovative/problem solver

• Experience in large molecule process development (late phase/commercial experience preferred)

• Knowledge of the large molecule regulatory environment, particularly FDA/ICH/ISPE guidelines on risk management, technology transfer and process validation.

• Strong operational skills, interdependent project/timeline management capabilities.

• Strong interpersonal skills with an eagerness to support colleagues across the organization and in partner organizations.
