This individual will be the key communication counselor focusing on Amgen Global Development, the function that leads the development of breakthrough therapies that transform the lives ofpatients. Drug development is undergoing significant transformation to accelerate the ability to bring much-needed therapies to all patients sooner. In this role, this individual will develop and implement strategic communication plans to ensure that audiences better understand and appreciate the innovation happening in global drug development and how this is accelerating timelines and ultimately the value of drug development and our pipeline. This individual will work closely with the Global Development Senior Leadership Team to develop and deliver a consistent and compelling narrative about the efforts we are making to innovate all aspects of clinical trial execution. They will also support our efforts in improving diversity in clinical trials so that our medicines represent all the patients that will ultimately use them to key media and other critical audiences.

The Global Development team essentially generates the evidence required to progress a molecule through the pipeline to approval and beyond. As well as the functional heads of the therapeutic areas, the Development SLT includes leadership from the Center for Design and Analysis (CfDA) responsible for designing and analyzing innovative clinical trials to understand how therapies can best serve patients. The Center for Observational Research (CfOR) responsible for the innovative application of real-world data (RWD) to understand the patient journey, describe unmet medical need and the clinical value of medicines, and finally, Global Development Operations (GDO) which is responsible for the delivery of high-quality data the clinical trials we are conducting globally.

This position reports to the Executive Director R&D Corporate Affairs with a dotted line to the SVP Global Development.

Responsibilities:

Develop communications strategies and plans that effectively and consistently communicate to targeted key audiences and stakeholders about the science and innovation going on in the drug development process, our efforts to improve diversity in clinical trials, and the promise of our early pipeline. Once fully vetted and approved, flawlessly execute on those plans and deliver measurable results.
Partner with the RISE (Representation in Clinical Research) team in the execution of the communications plan that highlights our commitment and differentiates Amgen through our efforts to improve the diversity and representation of racial and ethnic minority and other underrepresented populations in Amgens clinical research through science-based, data-driven strategies and to positively advance this dialogue across the industry.

Develop and support executive engagement plan for Global Development SVP, key Development VPs and RISE leaders, including proactively preparing company spokespeople via media training / presentation skills.
Partner with the media relations team to address incoming media requests for early pipeline products and proactively work to garner press coverage with trade press to elevate an appreciate for that Amgen is very much part of the wave of transformation sweeping drug development.
Partner with the product communications team and therapeutic leads on therapeutic area strategy and positioning.
Manage and direct public relations agency partners to assure maximum impact and assistance in reaching desired communications goals and objectives.

Work in partnership with Global Development leaders and HR on employee engagement / internal communications.
Partner successfully with investor relations to ensure consistency of messages to external audiences including media and financial world

Accountability for the pipeline section on Amgen.com is the responsibility of this person.

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree & 4 years of communications or public relations experience
OR
Masters degree & 7 years of communications or public relations experience
OR
Bachelors degree or & 10 years of communications or public relations experience

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in public relations, communications or journalism experience working in-house or within a PR agency
Biotechnology, pharmaceutical or healthcare product public relations including corporate experience highly desired
Hands on experience with clinical trial / drug development communications are desirable
Strong oral and presentation skills; ability to negotiate and persuade
Superior writing skills and proven media relations skills that are results-oriented
Strategic and creative thinker with ability to develop actionable programs that integrate soundly with business objectives
Ability to productively navigate a challenging and dynamic environment, and deal with rapidly changing priorities
Ability to interact with all levels of management and manage staff and vendors
Ability to think quickly, analytically and creatively to accommodate a dynamic communications environment
Excellent interpersonal skills; enthusiastic, team player and self-starter; serious commitment to hard work and excellence
