ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY

Position Summary:

Global Blood Therapeutics, Inc. (GBT) is seeking an Associate Director with expertise in structural biology and protein biochemistry, and a passion to understand mechanisms of disease and treatment. The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team and support our drug discovery effort by investigating protein crystallography and SAR of drug candidates to elucidate the drug mechanisms of action on the target. He or She will lead the structural biology function and be a key member in multiple drug discovery projects. Major responsibilities will include technology development, providing critical input on structure-based drug design, and novel biochemical assay development to translate SAR insight into testable hypotheses. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, detail-oriented, working independently with a variety of technologies to interrogate protein structure, biophysical and biochemical properties of protein and drug interactions, and be the SME in cross-functional teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build and manage the Structural Biology and Biochemistry function in Research
  • Design, enable, and execute Structural Biology and Biochemistry strategies across GBT’s pipeline programs and projects
  • Partner with Research teams to advance GBT’s drug discovery projects and portfolio
  • Foster collaboration and partnership with interdisciplinary members in Research teams
  • Initiate and lead external strategic collaborations and CRO resources to broaden the capabilities and improve operational efficiency and flexibility
  • Lead and contribute to scientific presentations and publications internally and externally at scientific conferences
  • Keep up to date on scientific advancements and new technologies

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics or a related field
  • 7+ years of industry experience in drug discovery
  • 3+ years of experience in leading and managing high performing teams/groups
  • Demonstrated ability of delivering structures and using structure-based drug design for hit identification, lead generation and optimization
  • Experience in biochemical assay development to interrogate drug MOA
  • Experience in leading and managing early discovery projects
  • Strong record of publications, patents, and project achievements
  • Experience in managing scientific collaborations and CRO outsourcing activities
  • Experience in scientific programming (Shell scripting, Python, Perl) and working with state-of-the-art software packages is a plus
  • Experience with cloud-based IT infrastructure is a plus
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
