Scientist / Senior Scientist, Antisense Therapeutic Platform

Waltham, MA | Full Time

The Company

We are Alloy Therapeutics – a biotechnology ecosystem company is empowering the global scientific community to make better medicines together. Through a community of partners, Alloy democratizes access to pre-competitive tools, technologies, services, and company creation capabilities that are foundational for discovering and developing therapeutic biologics. The company facilitates affordable, non-exclusive access to the entire drug discovery community, from academic scientists and small and medium biotech to the largest biopharma. At Alloy, we believe our industry should compete on getting the best drugs to patients as quickly as possible, not exclusive access to the best platforms. As a reflection of Alloy’s relentless commitment to the scientific community, Alloy reinvests 100% of its revenue in innovation and access to innovation. MAY THE BEST DRUG WIN.

Alloy is headquartered in Waltham, MA, with labs in Cambridge, UK; Basel, CH; San Francisco, CA; and Athens, GA. The team and company are rapidly expanding. Successful members thrive in our shared culture of accountability, deliberate trust, and open communication. As a team, we aspire to work together to exceed expectations and collectively contribute across the global organization to maintain our nimble, startup culture.

The Team

Alloy’s Genetic Medicines team has licensed certain technologies and collaborates with Arnay Sciences’ founder Sudhir Agrawal to advance novel oligonucleotide designs for therapeutics.  Dr. Agrawal has published over 300 research papers and has co-authored over 400 patents worldwide, including the invention of gapmer antisense technology widely employed in antisense candidates and multiple approved drugs, leading the development of platforms and drug discovery services for complex biological molecules.

The Role

As a Scientist, you will work on novel oligonucleotide modalities. You will lead efforts to advance the discovery and development of novel ASO formats and chemistry, developing an understanding of how the chemical structure and delivery format of antisense drugs impact the target biology and preclinical efficacy. This role requires experience in cell biology, RNA biology, and antisense/siRNA, including the latest technologies and tools employed in research. This role will report to the head of research and collaborate directly with Dr. Agrawal.

How You’ll Drive Impact

  • Create: Novel ASO drugs targeting RNA molecules involved in the disease progression
  • Investigate: Mechanisms of novel antisense modalities and examine their effects on targeted gene expression and any off-target effects
  • Asses: Intracellular trafficking pathways, including endosomal escape and their effects on antisense activity, internalization, and subcellular localization, perform functional validation and optimization
  • Coordinate: Communicate across multi-disciplinary teams to develop molecules, work with appropriate CROs for chemical synthesis; support the development of projects with external and internal partners
  • Communicate: Convey scientific concepts, experimental results, and interpretations to internal and external stakeholders; build networks with other leaders in the field

Why We Value You

  • You have relevant experience in molecular biology and RNA translation, including splicing and gene editing
  • You have hands-on experience with commonly used techniques in the cell, molecular biology, and biochemistry – such as cell culture, transfection, CRISPR KO, stable cell line selection, DNA/RNA/Protein extraction, and analysis, cloning, qRT-PCR, real-time PCR, subcellular fractionation, ELISA, Western blot, Northern blot, immunoprecipitation, immunofluorescence staining
  • You worked before with nucleic acid modalities, including siRNA, antisense, and mRNA technology
  • You can utilize new technologies and robotic automation for systematic consistency and efficiency.
  • You can perform biodistribution studies
  • You can prioritize and advance goals while working on multiple projects simultaneously
  • You thrive working independently and on a team, collaborating with others to achieve project goals
  • You can think outside the box and find creative solutions
  • You have strong communication and presentation skills
  • You are generous when others are needy, greedy, or fearful

Desired Multipliers

  • Ph.D. required in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Pharmacology, or related field
  • 2+ years of relevant experience (including post-doctoral work)
  • Experience with hands-on ASO discovery and preclinical development
  • Ability to work across various US and international time zones
