Desired Candidate profile: 

The Laboratory & Facilities Technician is part of the facilities operations team. The individual will perform operational support duties assisting the EH&S & Facilities Management Associate Director to ensure organizational safety and efficiency. This role will be responsible for routine maintenance and assisting with laboratory duties including but not limited to the Essential Functions listed below.

Essential Functions:

  • Have strong communication skills internal and external via text, email, telephone, and face to face. Respond to daily internal and external company requests in a timely, professional manner
  • Keep Annexon areas clean & organized (laboratory space, conference rooms, kitchen, halls, loading dock, shipping & receiving etc.)
  • Help with storing and inventory of all reagents in research
  • Manage and update chemical inventory and SDS directory
  • Receive/ship packages and reconcile packing slips- understanding temperature sensitivity
  • Monitoring of pressure gas/nitrogen & CO2, ability to change cylinders/tanks safely and efficiently
  • Trained for safe hazardous waste handling of bio bins/biowaste disposal
  • Trained for cleaning and maintaining decontamination equipment & supplies
  • Maintain basic paperwork according to site needs
  • Basic knowledge of building & lab management systems
  • Perform monthly inspections of safety showers, eye wash, and fire extinguishers
  • Perform weekly inspections of house systems and waste storage areas
  • Perform quarterly lab inspections
  • Basic asset management support (knowledge of equipment maintenance, Fumehoods, Biosafety Cabinets, etc.)
  • Management of lab consumables: procurement, inventory & verification of receipts
  • Awareness of different lab environments and safety levels (i.e.: BSL2, TC labs)
  • Basic abilities in carpentry and installation: mounting a shelf, installing a picture or whiteboards, and simple repairs or installations
  • Basic tool use & safety
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: 

  • Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 1 to 2+ years laboratory experience
  • 2+ years of facilities experience working in facility or laboratory maintenance
  • Familiarity with lab equipment and consumables preferred
  • Experience reviewing technical documents, such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and equipment manuals
  • Organization - strong organizational, planning, problem solving and project managing skills, with the ability to multitask and be detail-oriented
  • Must have strong time management and prioritization skills
  • Communication Impact - strong written and verbal communication skills with science & management team members, in addition to working with outside vendors/contractors
  • Safety Oriented - some practical knowledge of OSHA requirements
  • Energy & Self-Motivation - High activity level and fast-paced response environment

Additional Skills & Responsibilities:

  • Good mechanical skills
  • Ability to work effectively on a team, but also independently to take initiative when necessary
  • Good computer skills, specifically with Microsoft Office Suite and Box
  • A strong understanding of Word and Excel
  • Responsible and accountable for the care, condition, and upkeep of all interior areas
  • Ensuring all areas of the laboratory are being kept clean, organized & in “inspection ready” conditions
  • Keeping tools and repair parts well organized and labeled
  • Handling compressed gases and liquid nitrogen
  • Following Lab & Facility SOP guidelines, including proper disposal of waste streams
  • Assisting other research lab members as needed

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to stand, crouch, and climb to perform repairs, use ladder, and perform various types of manual labor
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to use hand tools and paint
  • Ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
