Executive Director, Biotherapeutics

The Role:

Reporting to SVP, Research & Early Development of Moderna, the Executive Director (ED) of Biotherapeutics is responsible for leading antibody platform development, antibody discovery, and protein engineering for therapeutic mRNA applications across Modernas therapeutic areas (Autoimmune, Immuno-Oncology, and Rare Diseases). The ED of Biotherapeutics will create and drive the vision for Modernas antibody discovery and protein engineering platforms, leading a team and collaborating across research to identify and apply the optimal platforms to generate best-in-class development candidates. This is a superb opportunity for the successful candidate to drive our antibody and biologics discovery programs in support of the ambitious expansion of our therapeutic mRNA pipeline. This role is ultimately accountable for the discovery and preclinical advancement of molecules composing a large pipeline of best-in-class mRNA therapeutics.

Heres What Youll Do:

• Design and lead the biotherapeutics strategy, utilizing in-house technologies, identifying next-gen platforms to pursue, and leveraging partners to provide access to the technologies best suited for our therapeutic targets.

• Lead and develop a world-class team of protein engineers, molecular biologists, and protein biochemists in antibody discovery laboratory and engineering work, focused on delivering well-characterized proteins and antibodies that complement and leverage advantages of our mRNA platform.

• Expand current capacity and establish infrastructure to align internal and external resources with portfolio priorities.

• Integrate Biotherapeutics team with discovery efforts across TAs and Computational Science collaborators to anticipate needs and introduce novel technologies.

• Act as a member of the Platform Leadership Team, contributing to scientific and strategy discussions to advance and enhance the scientific platform underlying our protein expression.

• Collaborate with Protein Sciences, Discovery Bioanalytics, and TAs to inform and, where needed, support reagent generation and assay development and transfer.

• Lead team, in collaboration with the Intellectual Property team, in drafting patent applications for novel formats and development candidates and in crafting IP strategy that unites our technology stack.

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

• Ph.D. in structural biology, protein biochemistry, molecular biology, or related field.

• Extensive experience in the field of antibody discovery and protein engineering with a proven ability to drive antibody discovery and development efforts

• Strong written and oral communication skills scaling through all levels of the organization, including senior management

• Strong leadership skills and an ability to collaborate productively across multiple cross-functional project teams are paramount.
