Guidehouse Digital (f/k/a Ace Info Solutions (AceInfo)) is currently seeking a Web Designer/Scientific to support our federal project, in Silver Spring, MD.  Remote work is possible subject to approval.

The National Weather Service’s (NWS) Meteorological Development Laboratory (MDL) conducts and sponsors applied research and development for the improvement of diagnostic and prognostic weather information; data depiction and utilization; warning and forecast product preparation; and data and forecast evaluation. Projects involve modern physical, dynamical, and statistical techniques implemented on operational computers. Emphasis is placed on integrated suites of guidance and final products for Weather Forecast Offices, River Forecast Centers, and National Centers to then be used for Impact-based Decision Support Services (IDSS).  To address preparedness for extreme weather phenomenon such as the recent devastating wildfires in the Western United States, MDL has developed the National Blend of Models (NBM),  a nationally consistent and skillful suite of calibrated forecast guidance based on a blend of both NWS and non-NWS numerical weather prediction (NWP) model data and post-processed model guidance.

The successful candidate will focus on providing probabilistic guidance for those weather elements pertinent to predicting Fire Weather hazards (e.g., temperature, humidity, quantitative precipitation forecasts, lightning density), with particular attention given to the Western United States as that is where Fire Weather incidents are most prevalent.  Probabilistic expansion of this suite will allow Weather Forecast Offices and National Centers (e.g, Storm Prediction Center), ample lead time on the order of 7-10 days to communicate extreme conditions leading to the onset, continued maintenance, or cessation of Fire Weather conditions to their respective partners and customers

U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident  is required for the position.

Candidate must successfully pass a Federal Background Investigation.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop probabilistic Fire Weather Guidance products for the purpose of improving short-fused, short-term, and medium-range Fire Weather forecasts to be used by NWS forecasters that crosscuts IDSS with the physical and social sciences for NWS Stakeholders and Customers
  • Develop, test, and validate probabilistic Fire Weather Guidance on NOAA’s High-Performance Supercomputer and present these results to NWS stakeholders and customers.
  • Deliver web capability within NOAA VLab for the provision of experimental real-time Probabilistic Fire Weather guidance.
  • Regularly engage and collaborate with NWS Forecasters by embracing Fire Weather product feedback to ensure scientific product integrity and buy-in.
  • Report on the outcomes of the new probabilistic Fire Weather products through publications and/or conference presentations
Requirements
  • BS in Computer Science, Physical Science, or Atmospheric Science
  • 4-6 years of experience
  • Experience with Fortran
