We are currently searching for a Scientist to organize and oversee a structured approach to setting up the recording system in the patient’s room so neurophysiological data is in the appropriate format and is of sufficient quality for subsequent processing and maintain electrophysiology recording equipment for patient testing. Organize patient testing, perform patient testing tasks, and train new lab personnel on patient testing. Lead the development and/or improvement of hardware and software infrastructure for acquiring neurophysiological data in real-time to provide closed-loop control of stimulation and/or the games used in memory testing and any other data type. Coordinate with the lab data engineer to develop and maintain software infrastructure. This opportunity is full-time, and it is on site in Bethesda, MD. 

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Advance the science in the laboratory through new procedures and discoveries
  • Train staff on the proper usage of laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and train others to use laboratory equipment and software
  • Mentor junior level scientists
  • Provide scientific and technical expertise to all visiting fellows, post-docs, and technicians
  • Assist with oversight of State-of-the-Art core facility serving the NIH community; review associated budget and provide recommendations to federal task leader
  • Design and conduct experiments and studies requiring the application of a broad professional knowledge of scientific theories and principles.
  • Advance the science through proposing and investigating new target projects for initiation based on novelty and relevance to human health
  • Maintain and culture human and rodent cancer cell lines for in vitro experiments
  • Prepare human and rodent tumor cells for in vivo tumor implantations
  • Assist when needed with animal work
  • Perform work on human specimens in support of ongoing clinical trials
  • Work with staff on the interpretation of experiments performed by research scientists
  • Direct and conduct special research projects that have a high priority for the laboratory with special emphasis in the development of novel research treatments
  • Review scientific data to determine if a research program can be developed around an idea or data package
  • Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot instruments and equipment in the laboratory
  • Provide advice and assistance to users in designing experiments, using instrumentation, data acquisition and analysis, and preparing figures for publication
  • Participate in the laboratory’s review of future proposals for resource allocations
  • Write technical reports and prepare manuscripts
  • Conduct bioinformatics data analyses and statistical analyses; prepare data for abstracts and manuscripts
  • Maintain a detailed and up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook detailing all experiments
  • Responsible for data management for all processed compounds
  • Must ensure project data quality; analyze and interpret project data
  • Provide interpretation of results, guidance, and scientific support to the management team
  • Coordinate with IT staff on all software issues specific to the chemistry group and on all computer problems
  • Identify and advise IC leadership on opportunities and program areas, research gaps and relevant program needs; make recommendations for consideration

Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Neuroscience, Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields
  • Minimum of two (2) years of specialized experience with electrophysiological recording
  • Computer skills including MATLAB, Excel, and other Microsoft Office Software
  • Skills in computer hardware, neurophysiology, use maintenance and engineering of physiological recording equipment
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills
