Data Science and Innovation Lead

The Data Science and Innovation Lead within Gilead's Commercial Operations organization is responsible for analytics innovation across Commercial Operations including piloting new AI/predictive analytics techniques. This new role will report to the Director, Advanced Analytics. This role will interact frequently with senior and executive management.

The individual in this role must leverage a broad and deep skill set (functional expertise in data science and advanced analytics, communication skills, leadership and influencing, executive presence, etc.) to identify opportunities for innovation and drive to successful implementation, working with a variety of key stakeholders - peer functional leads within Commercial Operations as well as brand marketing and sales leadership.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Identify business challenges and use cases to drive value through use of non-traditional analytical approaches. Drive innovation in the use of new AI and predictive analytics techniques to improve efficiency and effectiveness of US Commercial strategy and operations, coordinating across all Commercial Operations teams.
  • Architect solutions to unify disparate data sources including de-identified patient data, healthcare provider data, sales data, and promotional activity data; efficiently generate accurate and explainable models through deployment of AI/ML tools; develop processes to implement models to drive value
  • Collaborate with business unit and brand marketing leadership as well as peer Commercial Operations teams (Sales Analytics & Operations, Commercial Analytics & Forecasting, Commercial Strategic Insights, Marketing Operations, Commercial Learning & Development) to identify business use cases for application of AI and new analytics approaches (e.g., next best action, dynamic targeting, patient journey prediction, local marketing mix optimization, integrated multi-channel marketing, personalized training)
  • Conduct rapid prototyping exercises (“hackathons”) and pilot implementations to test out AI/predictive analytics solutions to identified and prioritized use cases
  • Collaborate with IT, business, and Commercial Operations stakeholders to lead scale-up/ full implementation of AI/predictive analytics systems as well as hand-off of operations to the appropriate Commercial Operations and/or IT functional teams.
  • Ensure Gilead stays abreast of innovative analytics approaches through partnerships with leading vendors, recruiting guest speakers, and generally promoting an atmosphere of innovation across the team.
  • Liaison with IT AI/ML platform team to develop automation/orchestration ML pipelines to gain operational efficiencies and reduce resource utilization.

  • Set an expectation and goal to serve as a trusted advisor to business unit leads and partners/stakeholders across the organization; focus in all cases on the business need, extract and deliver key insights and implications for Gilead, and tailor and present findings appropriately to maximize relevance and impact
  • Collaborate effectively with senior leaders across multiple functions and business units
  • Communicate complex dynamics/challenges in a clear and concise manner to senior leaders
  • Provide recommendations with objective and actionable insights to senior and executive management
  • Navigate organizational complexity effectively in a professional manner

Basic Qualifications of knowledge, experience, and skills:
  • Bachelors Degree and 8+ years OR Masters Degree and 6 + years of relevant work experience that includes strong evidence of prior experience driving successful implementation of Data Science techniques to solve business problems in a corporate environment is required
  • Strong evidence of project leadership (interaction with cross-functional partners, conflict resolution, and consensus-driving) and project management (planning, prioritization, objective setting, meeting management, and plan execution) is required
  • Strong communication/influencing skills and executive presence required. Proven experience communicating complicated analytics simply and clearly for senior management is required
  • Proven history of working and delivering on multiple projects simultaneously, with tight deadlines and changing priorities is required
  • Strong ability to use develop visualizations and present data/insights/recommendations as well as good knowledge of Microsoft Office (specifically PowerPoint and Excel) is required
  • Training and experience with various advanced analytics concepts including supervised and unsupervised algorithms (e.g. decision trees, random forests, gradient boosted machines, linear/logistic regression, clustering, xgboost etc.)
  • Relevant programming background (e.g. Python, R, SQL) and strong understanding of relevant big data/cloud and data science platforms (e.g. AWS, Alteryx, Teradata, etc.). Experience in using AutoML platforms like Datarobot,, Databricks is a plus.
  • Experience in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company and/or with pharmaceutical industry data sources is desirable
  • Undergraduate degree in STEM field required; Advanced degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, or related discipline is preferred.
