Senor Director, Software Engineering


In this vital role you will lead a multidisciplinary group of software engineers supporting software development for internal and external bioinformatics pipeline and commercial product end-to-end solutions. Your team’s work will support our global software products include cloud service and local installation solutions. Your team will continue to build and improve Mission Bio’s custom bioinformatics platforms and cloud provisioning infrastructures.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead a geographically dispersed team of internal and contract software engineers: Attract, engage, develop, and retain top talent at all levels of the software organization
  • Maintain a high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current literature, contending technologies and/or products and attendance of seminars and meetings
  • Lead software talent development initiatives including talent review, recruiting, performance management, and training and development programs and initiatives
  • Provide a strong leadership presence; influence and promote enthusiasm and support through verbal, written and presentation communications skills
  • Design software R&D strategies using a risk-based approach, gain alignment with peers and functional leadership, and drive execution by leading and influencing others in a multi-functional global environment
  • Supervise Director and Sr. Manager level Software leaders in the global organization and ensure software solutions are competitive and world class
  • Identify current and future market trends and opportunities and develop software solutions that will transform or change a market segment and accelerate growth
  • Working with Bioinformatics, Product and R&D, define and prioritize the product development pipeline, guide the development of innovative new software solutions
  • Initiate programs that evaluate new technologies, reporting competitive comparisons, and matching capabilities with requirements
  • Champion software development initiatives that will significantly improve customer efficiency, accelerate science and support faster transactions

Required Skills:

  • 10+ years; senior management experience leading software development for instrumentation projects and applications in the Life Sciences, Diagnostics, Biotech and/or Med Device field
  • Excellent organizational skills, including capability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and handle multiple and changing projects and priorities across multiple distinct business units
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex topics in non-technical language to customers and business leaders
  • Good business instincts that help support challenging the status-quo. Experience working with business partners to develop software strategy and assessing software partnerships
  • Software Life Cycle Management experience
  • Proficiency in multiple SW languages, Operating Systems, SW tools, SW development processes and SW Architecture. C, C++, Java, Python, Linux, Windows, Unix, Android, OOD, SOA, SAS, R, Apache Hadoop, Spark, Web technologies, database technologies, AWS and other Cloud tools, mobility tools, etc.
  • Experience with Software test methodology, automation, and tool sets
  • Experience in NGS sequencing bioinformatics pipeline analysis and tertiary analysis
  • Proficiency with agile development methodologies and tools
  • Use of software configuration management/ storage tools
  • Understanding of compliance standards such as 820.30, ISO 13485, IEC 62304, ISO14971
  • Track record of developing and launching complex software products, to both the RUO and clinical IVD market; fundamental understanding of Quality Regulations and FDA submissions
  • Demonstrated record of delivering new innovative algorithms and working with scientists and engineers to deliver new cutting - edge performance and functionality
  • Experience with cloud-based infrastructure as a service
  • Significant experience with privacy considerations and cybersecurity tools
  • Willingness to travel up to 25%, both domestic and internationally, as required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Informatics, Engineering or equivalent
  • At least 10 years of software development experience with an emphasis on NGS and big data software solutions
