SAMPLE MANAGEMENT TECHNICIAN

General Summary

This position is responsible for providing general Central Repository support in a contract research laboratory setting.  The Assistant Laboratory Technician must have a demonstrated understanding of basic scientific terminology, laboratory practices, research and methods.  This position must be able to work well within a team and independently on routine tasks.  This position will report directly to the Associate Director, Operational Controls and Compliance Services and receives close to moderate supervision.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists in Maintenance of the Sample Management Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and other available information systems.
  • Resolves problems requiring the application of standard procedures and techniques.
  • Exercises judgment in conducting laboratory operations procedures along with recognizing, postulating sources of deviations, addressing where possible and reporting deviation from expected results.
  • Observes and executes activities consistent with study protocols, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or Laboratory Methods, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulations, and safety and health practices.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of basic study design and execution.
  • Executes basic activities on a study following appropriate procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required by their supervisor.
  • Coordinates, prepares, executes, and assists with the following:
    • Receipt of samples;
    • Labeling of research sample tubes/containers;
    • Reagent preparation;
    • Sample preparation;
    • Reagent and supply acquisition and purchase; and
    • Sample disposition (store, ship, dispose).
  • Maintains organization and record keeping of the compound/ sample repositories.
  • Assists in populating and updating the central repository databases.
  • May assist in sample preparation tasks (e.g. weighing, aliquotting).
  • Coordinates, prepares and executes the shipment of research samples.
  • Performs all tasks related to compound and sample custodianship.
  • Processes time-sensitive requests of sample and reference compounds.
  • Responsible for maintenance schedules for sample management laboratory equipment.
  • Maintains, cleans, and checks calibration of Sample Management instrumentation.
  • Investigates malfunctions, performs repairs and contacts repair agencies as necessary.
  • Maintains equipment records and maintenance logs in compliance with SR standard operating procedures and GLP regulations.
  • Provides quality control through peer review of maintenance, monitoring and other Laboratory Operation's documentation.
  • Cleans Sample Management wet laboratory spaces, including disinfecting bench tops and hood spaces.
  • Maintains the laboratory in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Disposes of chemical and biohazardous waste generated by Sample Management through SR facilities.
  • Assists in maintaining an adequate in-house stock of Sample Management supplies.
  • Provides support for after-hour deliveries.
  • Supports and respond to after-hour alarms and/or other job critical emergencies.

Requirements/Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/ GED with 1-2 years related experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications – Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint
  • Observe appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding and following Standard Operating Procedure, Good Laboratory Practices requirements and Chemical Hygiene Plan

Work Environment

This position is in a laboratory environment and required the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including (but not limited to):

  • Eye protection (Safety glasses and/or full face shield)
  • Respirator (varies based on tasks and barrier requirements)
  • Tyvek/scrub suits
  • Nitrile (or equivalent) gloves (varies based on tasks)
  • Hearing protection (varies based on tasks)

Immunizations are required for this position and are determined by the study/agent.  Some examples include Tetanus, Hepatitis B, Smallpox, Polio, and Influenza.
