The Role:

Moderna is seeking a curious, detail-oriented research associate for our Nucleic Acid Technology team. In this laboratory-based position, the individual will participate in the synthesis and analysis of research scale material using novel processes in support of Modernas mRNA platform. Implementation of novel processes will require the individual to experiment and optimize to establish new protocols. Laboratory experience with nucleic acids and detailed recordkeeping is essential for this role. Experience with HPLC and mass spectrometry is a plus.

The candidate should have a background in biology, chemistry, or chemical engineering. The candidate should enjoy working in a dynamic and innovative environment and be flexible in working both individually and within cross-functional teams to enable cutting-edge nucleic acid research.

Heres What Youll Do:

  • Synthesize novel mRNA to enable research activities throughout Moderna

  • Develop and apply novel processes for mRNA synthesis

  • Perform analyses using various types of instrumentation (HPLC, mass spectrometry, etc.)

  • Execute experiments to support new assays and process improvements

  • Maintain scientific records of experiments and clearly communicate results

  • Maintain a clean and organized lab bench

  • Maintain equipment and instruments

  • Communicate scientific findings to colleagues and collaborators in formal and informal settings.

  • Collaborate with members of RNA Science, Process Development, and therapeutic programs

  • Follow Moderna's policies to ensure best practices (e.g. laboratory safety, electronic lab notebook, etc.)

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

  • BS or MS in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering, or closely related field

  • 1-5 years of relevant industry or academic research experience

  • Laboratory experience working with RNA and/or DNA

  • Knowledge of RNA and DNA chemistry and biology and standard analysis methods relevant to these molecules (ex. PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, CE, etc.)

  • Working familiarity with common analytical/purification methods (ex. HPLC, UPLC, LC-MS) is preferred

  • Experience with biochemical assay testing, development, and troubleshooting is preferred

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and effectively in a highly dynamic environment

  • Ability to quickly master new scientific techniques and concepts

  • Ability to multi-task to meet timelines and goals
