Sanaria is a biotechnology company working to develop and commercialize a novel and highly effective malaria vaccine. We are seeking an experienced accounting professional with strong grants and contracts management experience to serve as the company’s Sr. Financial Controller.

Reporting to the Chief Executive and Scientific Officer, the Senior Financial Controller is responsible for the overall management of Sanaria’s Finance Department, all accounting functions, the financial management of Sanaria’s grants and contracts and specific responsibilities as detailed below.

The Senior Financial Controller ensures the Company maximizes financial results and performance, budgets accurately and is compliant with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and all grant, contractual or other funding requirements, including DCAA, DFAS and similar protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for full cycle Accounting and overall management of Sanaria’s financial information
  • Month end closing and financial statement preparation and analysis
  • Preparation, update of Cash Projection spreadsheet monthly
  • Preparation of other key financial reports for Management, Board and other stakeholders as needed

Grants, Contracts, Sales Management

  • Responsible for the financial management of all NIH grants, DoD contracts and other funding sources
  • Prepare NIH drawdowns, maintain current financial records by grant, analyze actual expenses to ensure budget compliance and avoid overspend, prepare Federal Financial Reports (FFRs) at the closing of a grant
  • Responsible for preparation of all budgets for new grant and contract applications
  • Oversee, review, distribute monthly budget vs. actual reports by grant
  • Liaise with Project Management Team on non-financial administration of grants
  • Responsible for the preparation of monthly invoices to all DoD cost reimbursable and fixed contracts
  • Responsible for preparing invoices for product sales
  • Responsible for Accounts Receivable and follow up on past due payments

Accounts Payable, Credit Card Management

  • Responsible for the approval of all AP transactions
  • Coordinate bi-monthly payment (ACH) runs
  • Approve Purchase Order to ensure proper project is charged
  • Responsible for oversight, review and payment of Sanaria credit cards

Payroll, HR, Timesheet Management

  • Oversight and management of payroll (interact with HR and payroll service providers)
  • Responsible for monthly employee hours budget preparation
  • Oversight of weekly time reporting
  • Collaborate with HR service provider on:  Health insurance renewal, 401K plan management, on boarding/off boarding paperwork
  • Maintain staff list to include: date of hire, degree, salary history

Audit and Compliance

  • Ensure timely completion of Incurred Cost Submission to DFAS, DCAA
  • Ensure timely completion of SEFA audit and audit report submission to DFAS, DCAA
  • Ensure timely completion of annual financial audit
  • Serve as Company liaison for all external auditors and coordinate audits internally
  • Guide Management in interpreting and addressing audit and compliance findings

Staff Management

  • Supervise the Accounting Team of Senior Accountant and Accountant I
  • Develop and evaluate the performance of accounting staff

Technology and Vendor Management

  • Oversee all financial management systems
  • Serve as liaison and key point of contact for outside accounting firm
  • Serve as key contact for financial technology systems and vendors

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Experience with for-profit government funding including competitive grants and contracts
  • Experience with budget projections and budget development
  • Strong leadership and management skills with ability to delegate, train, coach and motivate staff
  • Experience with cash flows, balance sheet, grant/contract accounting, payroll, accounts payable, and auditing functions
  • Experience overseeing financial compliance and risk management
  • Hands-on financial manager with the ability to think strategically and act tactically
  • Ability to balance attention to detail with big-picture thinking
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Education, Work Experience and/or Licensure

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field. CPA or MBA with accounting/ financial management concentration preferred
  • Minimum 8 – 10 years accounting and financial management experience, with progressively responsible senior level experience in a small to mid-size biotechnology or pharmaceuticals company
