Seeking a highly motivated Scientist II with a focus in immunology, for our In Vitro Pharmacology research team in San Francisco. The individual will participate in the design and execution of experiments in biological systems to characterize and validate novel target/therapeutic mechanism of action, and screen for potency and efficacy of large molecule drug candidates via in vitro and ex vivo assays. Knowledge of multicolor flow cytometry, flow panel design, and mammalian cell culture is required. The candidate should also possess strong knowledge of and be proficient in relevant experimental biology techniques such as immunoassays (ELISA, MSD, Luminex), qPCR, biochemical assays, cell-based signaling and coculture assays, and handling of primary peripheral blood cells. This position will mentor and guide junior scientists and may manage research associates.  This position contributes to and supports the company’s research and development efforts to create high value therapeutics to address unmet medical needs. The individual will be expected to document experimental findings according to approved Nektar policy, and to draft associated technical reports. The individual must maintain knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories, develop hypothesis, analyze preclinical and clinical literature, and participate and contribute to discovery teams, in a matrix-based organization.

Responsibilities:

Works on complex problems in which analysis of data requires evaluation of various factors. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Normally receives no instructions on routine work, general instructions on new assignments and may provide guidance to junior level personnel. Synthesizes multiple data sources and draws general, non-obvious conclusions. Defines problems, develops approaches and develops experiments with sound judgment with minimal supervision. Uses professional concepts and scientific knowledge to contribute to the development of company concepts and principles to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways. Acts as a principal investigator in conducting own experiments.  Participates in the development of patent applications.  Interfaces with various departments, customers and partners.  Puts work practices in context with larger team. Coordinates activities with other team members.  Writes complex reports and protocols.  May assist with implementing organizational systems, identifying capital equipment, and projecting near-term resource requirements. May lead a small group, providing training as needed, and ensures adherence to company policies and quality requirements.

Requirements:

  • A PhD in a scientific discipline is required.
  • Equivalent experience may be accepted. A minimum of 2 years work experience in a research and/or development environment is required. Exceptional non-PhDs with demonstrated capabilities and/or significant experience may also be considered.
  • Lead the design and execution of biochemical and cell-based assays to support early discovery and preclinical development of pipeline assets.
  • Contribute at the bench as well as at strategic levels.
  • Interpret and communicate experimental findings to project teams and senior management.
  • Act as a Pharmacology functional representative on a team, as well as manage junior scientists and research associates.
  • May lead discovery teams, as necessary.
  • Expertise in relevant experimental biology techniques, including: biochemical and cell-based signaling and functional assays, ELISA, qPCR, and flow cytometry.
  • Experience with in vitro immunology models, including isolation and characterization of primary immune cells, is desirable.
  • A strong immunology background is required, with expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.
