Description:

The Gladstone Institutes is an independent, not-for-profit research institution. Its mission is to improve the health and well-being of all people through medical research and education in neuroscience, cardiovascular biology, immunology, and stem cell biology. Home to notable leaders in science and biomedicine, Gladstone comprises four institutes as well as various centers and programs. All of its approximately 500 members are aligned in their mission to carry out or support science that overcomes disease. Located in an award-winning building at the Mission Bay Campus, Gladstone offers a competitive salary and benefits program. It provides an ideal environment for those seeking to maximize and fully leverage their potential. Consider Gladstone and make a difference in human health.

The Weinberger Lab is seeking an administrative assistant to join our team. Leor Weinberger’s lab studies fundamental viral biology to develop new antiviral medicines against viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, herpesviruses, and HIV. His lab developed and pioneered a novel antiviral concept for resource-limited settings such as sub-Saharan Africa (see his TED talk). The group also develops novel therapies for herpesviruses such as cytomegalovirus, a leading cause of transplant failures and birth defects.

This person will work closely with Dr. Leor Weinberger, the lab’s PI, but will require the ability to work well independently, and manage a wide variety of tasks. The successful candidate will be passionate about precision in their work and be an exceptionally effective communicator. This job may be a great fit for an administrative professional or project coordinator who is looking for experience with project management, or working in a scientific environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing, formatting, and proofreading scientific manuscripts, research grants, and grant reports

  • Delegating project responsibilities to a team

  • Managing emails and responding professionally in a timely manner to research colleagues and government sponsors

  • Organizing calendar and scheduling meetings for PI

  • Coordinating travel arrangements and planning itineraries

  • Monitoring financial expenses, processing and tracking payments, maintaining financial records

  • Being the lab “social coordinator”: planning team events, coordinating new member arrivals to and departures from the lab

  • Maintaining understanding of individuals’ and teams’ roles at Gladstone to best refer questions and contacts

This person will be expected to juggle a wide variety of tasks; the ideal candidate must be willing to learn and take on tasks somewhat unconventional for academic environments (e.g., interfacing with biotech startups/spinouts) to assist the PI at a very pivotal time for the lab’s research.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 2-5 years previous administrative work experience

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent life and work experience

  • Skilled with Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Zoom, and DropBox

  • Scientific experience, either professionally or educationally, with an ability to satisfactorily write and read scientific language

Additional Information:
  • Title and salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
  • Be a part of big ideas and consider Gladstone. Your difference will make a difference in human health.
  • Gladstone is an equal opportunity employer.
