Moderna is seeking a talented individual to lead our Informatics Software Engineering team. This high performing team at Moderna is responsible for building innovative, user-friendly web apps for our internal users to optimize and automate their business processes. This unique internal development capability is a key component of our strategy to build a truly digital biotech and accelerate the development of new mRNA medicines for patients across the world.
The Informatics platform has apps that support activities across Research, Technical Development, and Clinical. Many of the apps are also integrated directly with instruments and robotics platforms to physically automate processes and collect rich structured data. The apps also integrate with numerous AI algorithms developed by our data science team to augment human decision making. The successful candidate for this role will be responsible for taking the Informatics Software Engineering team to the next level by improving our development and delivery processes, developing and upskilling our engineering team, and leading the continuous technical evolution of our software platform.
Heres What Youll Do:
Lead a large software engineering team spanning multiple supported business units and geographic locations to deliver novel full stack JS/TS web applications that transform Modernas business processes
Own technical roadmap for the Informatics application platform and infrastructure to ensure maximum efficiency and satisfaction of software engineers
Develop organizational and staffing models across multiple teams and geographies that evolve as the team grows
Operate at a strategic level, driving the organization to deliver on long-term business objectives, but also dive into the tactical details to resolve technical bottlenecks
Be a strong advocate for your team, ensuring they have the tools and support they need from other teams and functions such a Cybersecurity and Cloud Operations
Establish technical standards and standardized processes for development, deployment, and support
Create operational metrics and drive continuous improvement of processes to improve quality, rate of delivery, and user satisfaction
Foster a culture of ownership, centered on delivering high quality, secure, and resilient software applications
Recruit top technical talent at various career stages with a focus on interview efficiency and candidate experience
Develop software engineering learning paths, training curricula, and mentorship programs to develop world-class technical talent
Continuously research new technical capabilities and ways of working to improve our operations and applications
Partner closely with product owners and other technical disciplines (data science, data engineering, automation, etc.) to deliver integrated cross-functional products
Partner with agile project management team to develop maximally efficient development and delivery practices and continuous improvement
Establish robust change control and documentation processes to allow for GxP validated applications as needed
Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:
10+ years of experience managing software engineering teams, with at least 5 years leading multiple independent engineering teams in an enterprise environment. Experience delivering software solutions in the biopharma space is desirable but not required
Experience architecting robust cloud-based applications leveraging microservices, APIs, scalable compute, and distributed storage.
Extensive experience setting software engineering standards and developing policies and processes to deliver with excellence. Formal OE training is a plus.
Deep expertise in running a data-driven organization with a focus on metrics that deliver improved quality, throughput, and help developers grow in their abilities.
Strong collaboration skills and a proven experience successfully working in a matrixed environment in close partnership with product owners and other technical capabilities.
An excellent people leader with expertise in coaching and mentoring software engineers and building upskilling paths for an engineering practice.
Strong understanding of cybersecurity best practices and experience building development processes that incorporate security from design through deployment.
Experience operating in agile development processes with rapid deployment timelines and shifting business priorities. Experience with Jira highly desired.
Demonstrated experience leveraging CI/CD and enforcing automated testing practices.
A sharp focus on efficiency and happiness of your teams with a willingness to challenge convention and peers to reduce viscosity.
Strong ability to develop multiyear strategic roadmaps for technology platforms, frameworks, and processes.
Experience following robust change control processes, carefully balancing with agile delivery. Experience delivering in a regulated environment desired.
Excellent communication skills and experience communicating to executives and senior leaders
A passion for learning and a proven history of researching and implementing new technologies without sacrificing short-term value delivery to the business.
Bachelors degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent required. Masters degree preferred.
