The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc.  The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Facilities Maintenance and Engineering (FME) mission is to support the NCI at Frederick in their mission to cure cancer and AIDS. FME is responsible for the physical campus - its research laboratory space, administrative space, the infrastructure that supports the buildings, and the landscape that surrounds them. In addition, we are responsible for managing, planning, designing, and construction management of renovations at the FNLCR. 

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designing electrical distribution, lighting, motor control, instrumentation and controls for laboratory renovations and facilities improvements
  • Providing technical guidance to contractors, A&Es, scientific personnel and maintenance shops
  • Reviewing A/E plans and specifications
  • Ensuring compliance with engineering practices and established laws, codes, regulations, and standards, including the NIH Design Requirements Manual
  • Performing on-site technical inspections of equipment and systems to ensure design and specification compliance

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in engineering or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree.  Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to education requirement, a minimum of five (5) years of experience in electrical engineering design
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.; Position includes walking, standing, bending, stooping, climbing stairs, and exposure to dust or particulates
  • Experience designing using AutoCAD software 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with Revit software
  • Experience in electrical design of building renovations and campus utilities
  • Experience in laboratory construction and facilities maintenance
  • Ability to multi task and stay organized in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication skills with all levels of personnel through written and oral presentations
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate with management
  • Licensed Professional Engineer or Engineer in Training
  • Familiarity with scientific/laboratory equipment and experience in the design of BSL2 laboratories
