We are currently searching for a Clinical Research Scientist to support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is a full-time position with MSC and is onsite in Bethesda, MD.


Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work on development, validation and implementation of high complexity laboratory developed tests requiring a high degree of expertise in molecular and genomic methods.
  • Work on design, development, validation and implementation of novel laboratory tests including fungal serology, new platforms of MALDI-TOF MS and various molecular genomic techniques for identification of pathogenic fungi and parasites from culture of clinical samples.
  • Work on design, development, validation and implementation of in vitro and in vivo studies to evaluate activity and efficacy of antifungals.
  • Maintain and organize highly detailed records pertaining to the development, validation and implementation of next generation sequencing assays, fungal serology, MALDI-TOF MS, in vitro and in in vivo antifungal susceptibility testing.
  • Perform DNA extraction, sequencing library preparation and indexing, and loading of Sanger and next generation sequencing instruments.
  • Maintain next generation sequencing equipment as well as Sanger sequencing reagents and perform troubleshooting.
  • Train new staff in next generation sequencing methods .
  • Perform Sanger sequencing of bacterial, fungal, and mycobacterial isolates.
  • Compile Sanger sequencing data and generate interpretive report.
  • Perform laboratory procedures for microbiology specimen handling and processing, test analyses; report and maintain records of patient test results.
  • Perform next generation sequencing experiments in support of clinical research projects.
  • Perform routine high-complexity molecular diagnostics testing, such as quantitative viral PCRs.
  • Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures when test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; correct problem or notify staff; document all corrective actions taken.
  • Communicate and consult with pertinent medical personnel regarding collection procedures; troubleshoot any problems with the specimen or documentation.
  • Document all quality control activities, instrument calibrations and maintenance preformed.
  • Perform proficiency testing in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Maintain records of instrument failure, troubleshooting and QC.
  • Organize daily work based on priorities and needs of the laboratory and patients.
  • Inventory reagents and supplies.
  • Collaborate with staff to evaluate new techniques; perform comparative studies with older technology; perform evaluations to determine new guidelines.
  • Comply with accrediting and inspections agency requirements participating in activities associated with the laboratory accreditation process.
  • Perform MALDI-TOF MS testing of isolates.


  • Master's degree in a science related discipline; two (2) years of specialized experience plus a Bachelor's degree is equivalent to a Master's degree.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in clinical Microbiology, or equivalent training, or MT (ASCP).
  • Computer skills to include MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to lift 10 - 30 pounds
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
