Gilead Sciences is seeking an Associate Director, Risk Management to join its Risk Management & Insurance team. The primary responsibility of this position is to lead the continued evolution of Gilead's casualty insurance programs and associated risk control activities, aimed at minimizing risks to our business. The ideal candidate will be an energetic and motivated self-starter, with significant experience in managing large multinational insurance programs. The candidate should be able to independently manage insurance renewals from start to finish, including the timing of interdependent deliverables. We are looking for someone that has successfully demonstrated an ability to actively engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders partners to identify, assess and mitigate a complex set of risks. This position has high growth potential and will report to the Director, Risk Management.

The Associate Director will provide counsel, advice, and reporting on a broad spectrum of risk-related issues (e.g., risk identification and mitigation strategies, insurance and non-insurance risks transfer strategies, loss funding and accrual requirements, and claims management activities). In addition, the individual is responsible for owning and executing all aspects of the casualty insurance programs, including assessing risks and recommending insurance program structures, leading insurance policy procurement, management of claims in partnership with internal and external counsel, management of relationships with third party service providers (including brokers, insurers and consultants), preparing loss reports and budgets, providing contract support, and ensuring compliance with insurance regulations.

Core Job Responsibilities
  • Independently manage all aspects of insurance related to casualty risks, including the collection of exposure data and recommendation of risk transfer structures
  • Identify areas of risk control improvement and make data-supported recommendations that are understandable to a broad range of audiences
  • Provide expert level assistance in negotiations of insurance and indemnity provisions in contracts
  • Regularly collaborate with various internal stakeholders, including Commercial, EH&S, Employee Relations, Facilities, and Security to minimize risk to Gilead
  • Regularly interface with brokers, insurers and third party claim administrators for management of insured risks
  • Consistently maintain proper internal controls and ensure compliance with worldwide insurance laws and regulations, internal company policies and contractual obligations
  • Perform timely and accurate ad hoc reporting and analyses as required
  • Actively participate in cross-functional projects and lead department projects of varying complexities
  • Prepare and present internal and external presentations, including to senior management
  • Participate in on-site visits, domestically and internationally, to assess casualty risks
  • Manage payment of invoices and resolve any invoice-related issues
  • Provide support on management of open claims.


Education, Experience and Skills
  • 10+ years of experience and increasing responsibility in risk management either at a Fortune 500 company or an insurance brokerage, and a Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance or Risk Management. 8+ years of experience with an MBA or MS/MA.
  • Experience working/consulting for a complex, global organization
  • ARM designation preferable
  • Strong knowledge of the commercial insurance market, with specific experience in managing casualty insurance programs, including but not limited to General Liability, Workers' Comp, Auto Liability, and Executive Liability
  • Life science, pharmaceutical, or biotech industry experience a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to work effectively with multiple functions and diverse audiences
  • Highly motivated and proactive individual with a positive mindset, able to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment both independently and in cross-functional, global teams
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Solid project management skills
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365
