The Role:

Moderna is seeking a talented Senior Scientist experienced in protein biochemistry and analytical techniques to support vaccine design and development programs for infectious diseases. This is an exciting opportunity to define and contribute research goals across a range of diverse vaccine programs advancing through the Moderna pipeline. The incumbent will use biochemical and biophysical methods to characterize protein antigens, including antibody recognition, homogeneity analysis, stability, post-translational modifications and enzymatic activity. As part of the mRNA vaccine design process, proteins are required to characterize novel antigen designs and specific immune responses and are also used in pre-clinical and clinical assays. Ability to perform quantitative equilibrium and kinetic analyses, interpret data and communicate results to program teams will be required. Experience with biophysical techniques such as SPR, BLI, DLS, DSF and HPLC-SEC-MALS will be essential. Candidates with backgrounds in immunology, bacteriology, virology, biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology are of high interest. Experience with automation and associated data processing tools will be an advantage. The incumbent will work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment and help advance the infectious disease vaccine portfolio and will in addition facilitate collaborations with external research partners and contractors. Applicants should have excellent laboratory research knowledge and skills, be collaborative and have excellent communication skills.

Heres What Youll Do:

  • Design and perform protein-protein binding characterization between antigens, antibodies and ligands, and derive quantitative interaction parameters.

  • Perform and manage quality-control experiments for proteins expressed and purified by the protein production team.

  • Utilize high-throughput SPR and BLI instrumentation, design experimental workflows and data analysis techniques and design automation capabilities to support pre-clinical and clinical research objectives.

  • Develop experimental and data processing workflows for protein analytics including DLS, DSF, Jess immunoassay/WB & HPLC-SEC-MALS, glycosylation analyses.

  • Perform in vitro biochemical and enzymatic processes (eg: proteolysis, biotinylation and antigen activity assays).

  • Occasionally assist team members in purification of antigen proteins using AKTA FPLC.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop mRNA vaccines and therapeutics.

  • Generate, interpret, summarize and present experimental data and results at group meetings, project meetings and department meetings.

  • Propose and pilot new experimental approaches to accelerate and improve mRNA lead discovery including introducing of instrumentation and integrative data analysis processes.

  • Identify new opportunities to contribute to protein and mRNA vaccine antigen design and evaluation.

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

  • Exceptional PhD in immunology, bacteriology, virology, biochemistry, biophysics or structural biology with significant postdoctoral and/or industry experience.

  • Outstanding experience and knowledge in protein-protein interactions with relevant experience with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and biolayer interferometry (BLI), experimental design, data analysis and ability to transition hypotheses into data and scientific insights.

  • Knowledge of mRNA biotechnology, bacteriology, virology, vaccinology, protein structure and vaccine design is a plus.

  • Extensive experience in protein biochemistry would be an advantage.

  • Candidates will be curious in exploring new paths for drug discovery, bold in proposing creative experimental designs and ideas and will work collaboratively with multifunctional teams and be relentless in pursuing successful outcomes.

  • Candidates must possess excellent data management and verbal/written communication skills, have excellent track record in experimental performance, evaluate and process data, present results in a clear, concise and timely manner, and assist with the preparation of final written reports.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a highly dynamic, fast-paced, matrixed environment with evolving priorities.

  • Ability to assist in mentoring of junior staff to achieve scientific and career goals aligned with business objectives.
