The Role:
Reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering, the Principal Engineer GMP Utilities (PE-HVAC) will be the subject matter expert (SME) for the HVAC and BMS engineering for Moderna. The candidate will lead HVAC/BMS engineering discipline for Capital Projects throughout the Moderna global footprint. Additionally, candidate will also play an active role in providing guidance to existing facilities and laboratories.

Candidate should have knowledge of regulatory and performance requirements for HVAC, Laminar Flow Units, Biosafety Cabinets used in the manufacture of pharmaceutical products and able to generate or review and approve project documentation such as URS, functional descriptions, as well as complete Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) in vendor locations or in the commissioning phase of projects in the field. The PE-HVAC will be expected to maintain timeliness, accuracy, and thoroughness throughout the project lifecycle. This individual will lead projects in the HVAC/BMS discipline and will likely participate in more than one project at a time. The PE-IC will work closely with vendors, consultants, clients, and project leadership in providing control solutions.

He/she may serve as the overall project lead or project technical lead. The role requires the ability to manage multiple contractors and a portfolio of technical projects at the same time.

This role reports into Senior Director of Engineering and is based in Norwood, MA. Travel to support global manufacturing expansion could be up to 25% at critical project phases.

Heres What Youll Do:

  • Leads the project design and is a key designer on base building/infrastructure upgrades; assembles riser diagrams, schedules, and floor plans.

  • Responsible for specification development for Air side design including single pass, 100% outside air handling systems for critical environments with humidity control, variable airflow systems with fume hoods and acoustically sensitive design.

  • Wet side design including chilled and heating hot water and other related Plant Utilities.

  • Establishes design criteria from the project proposal and assembles basis of design documents including Facility pressurization and cascade

  • Assembles a complete set of contract documents for their trade including the lay out main equipment rooms, closets, shafts, risers, etc.

  • Plan, conduct and technically direct projects or the major phases of significant projects.

  • Coordinate the efforts of engineers and technical support staff.

  • Conduct investigations or test of considerable complexity pertaining to the development of new designs, methods and materials.

  • Review literature, patents and current practices relevant to the solution of assigned projects.

  • Recommend corrections in technical analysis and design.

  • Evaluate vendor capabilities to provide required products or services.

  • Provide technical consultation to other organizations and work leadership for junior engineers.

  • Reviews shop drawings, RFIs, Contractor change orders, performs site visits and punch-lists with limited supervision to verify that designs are being implemented accurately.

  • Assists in establishing an efficient project schedule for project team that ensures appropriate use of resources while adhering to aggressive deadlines.

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years of work experience with HVAC systems design.

  • Bachelors degree in an engineering field required.

  • Masters degree preferred.

  • Minimum 12 years of Facilities and/or Engineering experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries required.

  • Minimum 7 years of experience leading a design team and/or previous experience working with MEP engineering consulting firms.

  • Comprehension of practical applications of engineering science and technology.

  • Expert use of analytical and CAD software.

  • Requires expert knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills

  • Project management experience for multiple projects in concurrent design. Able to attend design team meetings and contribute real time. Able to document action items and decisions and disseminate to team members.

  • Proficiency in the design and code knowledge of the following systems is required: Mechanical and Plumbing Codes, ASHRAE Standards,

  • Clear understudying of building systems coordination with all disciplines and agencies including architects, civil engineers, electrical engineers, utilities coordination, energy use requirements and permit approval jurisdiction.

  • Strong knowledge of the relevant regulatory requirements for HVAC systems

  • Experience with LEED and sustainable projects.
