Sr. Product Manager, Sequencing Platform Software

The Senior Product Manager will be responsible for driving successful development of instrument control software across the entire portfolio of PacBio instruments, including on-market platforms and platforms in development. The position is responsible for understanding PacBio long-read and short-read customers and representing the customer to internal product development teams. The role will produce and prioritize customer and market requirements and translate these into user needs and design inputs while working closely with Technical Product Managers in product development. This role will take ownership of prioritizing needs across a portfolio of sequencing platforms and manage multiple backlogs to help deliver a consistent customer experience, and to support the overall sequencing business.

Responsibilities:  

  • Conduct market research in the form of direct customer interviews, collaboration with PacBio colleagues in the field, and customer surveys
  • Collaborate with Product, Bioinformatics, and Software Engineering teams to design a consistent approach for multiple sequencing platforms, while meeting the needs of each target market
  • Prioritize multiple backlogs and assist development in determining the content of software updates to achieve long-term product goals
  • Document customer and market requirements, and collaborate with Technical Product Managers to translate these into product requirements and design inputs.
  • Assist in defining the vision for the product marketing team's products
  • Represent the broader product marketing team in Scrum meetings and product sprints
  • Monitor and evaluate product progress at each stage of the process
  • Be a champion for Pacific Biosciences' customers, representing their needs in the sequencing informatics space
  • Assist in developing a holistic product strategy for the broader sequencing business to meet company objectives
  • Work cross-functionally with a core team to creatively develop and test product concepts and ideas
  • Work closely with multi-disciplinary teams including but not limited to R&D, Sales, Program Management, Finance and Manufacturing to ensure successful implementation of product requirements
  • Liaise with the broader product team to create product marketing materials, promotional campaigns, organize scientific events
  • Collaborate with Applications Lab Scientists, Field Applications Specialists and Engineering, to help developing training programs and documentation
  • Partner with customer support to drive customer feedback


Position Requirements:  

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience in life science, software development or related field, ideally with >3 years in product management or product owner positions
  • Degree in molecular biology, engineering, computer science, computer engineering or other related fields required. Ph.D., MBA, or other advanced degree desirable, but not required.
  • Excellent knowledge of user-centered design principles
  • Experience translating software requirements into user stories for development teams to deliver in an Agile environment
  • Experience with Agile software development process with in-depth knowledge of Scrum and Agile Software Development Methodology
  • Experience across instrument control and analysis software products with associated technical depth in the life science field strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams without formal authority, and to work effectively with customers, development, and field teams
  • Outstanding leadership, teamwork, and communication skills
  • Must have an excellent work ethic, proven ability to prioritize effectively, and unquestionable integrity
  • Hands on, high energy, and highly responsive
  • Ability to travel up to 30%
