Allergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie Company, is seeking an initiative-taking and accomplished discipline expert for the role of Principal Research Scientist II of Biological Research within the Toxin Innovation group. The candidate will drive functional performance in a multidisciplinary discovery research program by conceiving and leading complex discovery projects to produce novel, next generation protein therapeutics.

The successful candidate should possess an extensive and proven record of successfully directing high-performing discovery biologic research activities. Knowledge of the discovery process and transitioning to development is critical, including project conception, strategic planning, project budgeting, protein engineering, biophysical characterization, cellular mechanism of action and in vivo pre-clinical pharmacological analysis. Experience with projects varying from early-stage discovery research through transitioning of lead molecules to development is required.

The candidate will have a proven track record of leading high-performing teams including cross-functional and matrixed teams across multiple sites. Productive interactions with development, clinical, and commercial colleagues are a requirement of the position. Successfully leading diverse teams with varying backgrounds and levels of experience will be a necessity and leading by influence is a critical skillset for the position. The candidate will maintain a productive, collaborative, and inclusive laboratory environment consistent with regulatory and company expectations.

A successful candidate must have the aptitude to tailor communication and interactions that vary from technical team meetings to representing the program and strategy to executive level management. The successful candidate will have a strong and established scientific background (neuroscience, immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, etc.).

Key responsibilities:

  • Drives functional performance by designing and implementing studies aimed at new or improved products
  • Develops and achieves discipline strategy in alignment with functional goals and key scientific objectives
  • Directs project activities and professional development of a group of scientists by effectively mentoring, guiding, and supervising scientific personnel
  • Advances scientific expertise within function and actively collaborates with multi-disciplinary experts to advance programs from research to development
  • Ensures quality and effectiveness of key results of major project plans within function through sound design, early risk assessments, and implementation of fallback strategies
  • Proactively advises and shares knowledge and expert opinions with direct reports, peers, and senior management. Mentors and trains functional colleagues and assess current and emerging business challenges enabling functional goal achievement
  • Sources and identifies emerging scientific trends from internal and external sources and assess relevance. Integrates trends into functional short-term objectives
  • Manage key documentation and inventories in compliance with Federal Regulations
  • Presents program updates and research strategies to functional scientific and non-scientific leaders as well as potential and existing partners
  • Manages research strategy, including working with cross-functional team members to accomplish the goals and requirements of the organization, including excellence in execution, and workload prioritization.
  • Presents scientific concepts and results for functional scientific and non-scientific leaders as well as potential and existing partners.
  • Develops direct reports.

Education and Experience 

  • PhD-level education in Neuroscience, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Synthetic Biology, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry or related biological science discipline with at least 8 years of related experience in discovery research.

Job Qualifications 

  • Proven ability to innovate with a history leading discovery research projects
  • Strong team leadership and motivational skills with demonstrated ability to manage direct reports and work in a matrix team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact well with diverse groups within functions (research areas, commercial, development, among others) and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.
  • Experience in characterizing natural and recombinant biopharmaceutical agents including developing, performing, and troubleshooting a wide variety of in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo pharmacological assays.
  • Extensive experience with pharmaceutical development processes (including, but not limited to lead characterization, target engagement, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, immunogenicity assessments and basic toxicology).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required as is experience with documentation of experimental plans, budget, timelines, and generating high quality technical reports.
  • Experience with initiative-taking and critical evaluation of internal and external research and development programs.
  • An understanding of protein engineering/design for desired biopharmaceutical characteristics is required.
