We are currently searching for a Biologist to independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. This is a full-time, on-site opportunity in Baltimore, MD.  

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Perform small animal surgery, including stereotaxic.
  • Conduct site target viral injections.
  • Plan and administer biological research programs.
  • Study basic principles of plant and animal life, such as origin, relationship, development, anatomy, and function.
  • Develop and maintain liaisons and effective working relations with groups and individuals, agencies, and the public to encourage cooperative management strategies or to develop information and interpret findings.
  • Supervise biological technicians and technologists and other scientists.
  • Monitor and observe experiments, recording production and test data for evaluation by research personnel.
  • Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings.
  • Operate, calibrate, or maintain equipment used in quantitative or qualitative analysis, such as spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, or computer-controlled analyzers.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Operate laboratory equipment to analyze samples.
  • Analyze laboratory findings.
  • Program and use computers to store, process, and analyze data.
  • Monitor operational procedures in technical environments to ensure conformance to standards.
  • Interpret research or operational data.
  • Record research or operational data.
  • Conduct anatomical analysis including animal perfusions, brain tissue immunohistochemical preparation.
  • Maintain the daily operation of the Core equipment service contracts, order reagents, maintain and troubleshoot microscopes, cryostats, image analysis computer, etc.
  • Sample preparation for light sheet microscopy and two-photon microscopy.
  • Train Core staff in cryostat sectioning, immunostaining, section mounting, image collection, data analysis.
  • Participate in the experimental design, data collection, data interpretation and preparation of manuscripts.
  • Draft contracts for services and coordinate their execution.
  • Train NIDA-IRP users in emerging technologies.
  • Train users how to use microscopes in Histology and Imaging Core.
  • Participate in NIDA IRP PI meetings, Core Manager meetings and other program meetings.
  • Host workshops, seminars, talks for new emerging technology.
  • Attend relevant scientific conferences and training courses.
  • Familiarity and/or experience with light sheet microscopy, 2 photon microscopy, Scanner, brain clearing techniques.
  • Familiarity and/or experience with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Bitplane Imaris, R, Python, MATLAB.

Requirements
  • Ph.D. degree in Molecular Biology
  • At least 1-2 years of experience
  • Familiarity and/or experience with light sheet microscopy, 2 photon microscopy, VS scanner, brain clearing techniques and other histological techniques
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written
