As the Lead Scientist of Cell Line Derivation and Optimization at Mission Barns, you will be building and coordinating a team of scientists and research associates to derive cell populations from animal tissue and optimize their key performance parameters for animal fat production. Candidates are expected to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and expertise in cell biology and cell line development, as well as team management skills. This role will be required to independently lead and deliver individual projects and manage direct reports’ goals and schedule. You and your team will collaborate with colleagues across functions within the company to advance our mission. Title and responsibilities will be commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities
  • Leading the isolation, selection, engineering, and characterization of cell lines used in production of animal fat cells and tissue
  • Building and managing the cell line derivation and optimization team
  • Aligning with senior leadership to implement critical decisions
  • Planning and executing scientific workflows based on company objectives
  • Conducting rigorous experimental design, documentation, and data analysis
  • Concise and effective reporting and presentation of data
  • Providing creative solutions and demonstrate critical thinking
  • Leading and collaborating with team members to support upstream and downstream work

About You
  • Ph.D in Biological Sciences/Engineering or 7+ years of Biological industry experience is required. Advanced degree and industry experience is strongly preferred.
  • Expertise in cell culture of primary cells including cell isolation, cell characterization and cell engineering
  • Deep knowledge in cell biology and biological sciences
  • Experience in team management is strongly preferred
  • Strong track record of peer-reviewed papers is preferred
  • Scientific rigor towards continuous improvement of cell culture technologies
  • Adaptability and flexibility in a fast-paced startup environment
  • Eager to learn, grow, and contribute
  • Excellent communication skills and presentation skills
  • Attitudinally constructive and positive
  • Passionate about and/or intellectually interested in the technology and/or mission
