The Role:

Moderna's Research and Early Development Team is seeking a skilled and highly motivated Sr. Scientist of Pharmacology for a position based at their Cambridge, MA site.  The Sr. Scientist will be part of the Pharmacology team, leading projects to improve Moderna's proprietary mRNA and lipid nanoparticle platforms. She/he/they will work closely with the Pharmacology and Chemistry teams to design, execute and interpret experiments to evaluate drug properties of novel therapeutics. This work will include developing and conducting animal studies to assess the efficacy and tolerability of novel lipid components and mRNA molecules. In addition, the Scientist will help to establish, as necessary, novel animal models to assess immunogenicity and mechanisms of RNA therapeutics. The candidate should have hands-on experience applying animal studies to study drug mechanisms and disease biology. The successful candidate will also have extensive experience using biochemistry, histological and molecular approaches to analyze biological samples. In addition, applicants should be collaborative team members with excellent organizational and communication skills.

The candidate must thrive in a fast pace environment with high expectations. Integrity, ability to share experimental issues and troubleshoot, curiosity, collaborative spirit, respect for people, exemplary work ethic and setting the bar high are key values to thrive in our Team.

Here's What You Will Do

  • Design and perform studies to understand the structure and activity relationship of new lipid components designed by the chemistry discovery team.

  • Work closely with the non-clinical team to design and perform studies to assess the therapeutic window of mRNA therapeutics.

  • Scientifically lead in vivo pharmacology group research associates to execute in vivo studies efficiently.

  • Interpret and summarize experimental data.  Present experimental results at group meetings, project meetings and department meetings

  • Organize, document, and share scientific work in a highly collaborative environment.

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table

  • Ph.D. (required) with minimal 3 years' experience leading in vivo animal studies for drug discovery; industry experience a plus.

  • Proficient in molecular biology and biochemistry, including RT-qPCR, protein quantification by western analysis, ELISA, and other equivalent techniques.

  • Experience with histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization.

  • Proficient in animal handling, tissue collection, and basic intravenous, subcutaneous, and oral dosing techniques.

  • Extensive experience with standard programs for data analysis and visualization.

  • Proficient in preparing presentations for scientific and strategic discussion.

  • Desire to continually review literature for relevant approaches and new technology with application to mRNA and lipid nanoparticle therapeutics.

About Moderna

In over 10 years since its inception, Moderna has transformed from a research-stage company advancing programs in the field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across seven modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for rapid clinical and commercial production at scale. Moderna maintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use and approval of one of the earliest and most effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases. Moderna has been named a top biopharmaceutical employer by Science for the past seven years. To learn more, visit
