ROLE SUMMARY
The Vice President of Bacterial Vaccines and Technology will work in partnership with the Senior Vice President of Vaccine Research and Development (VRD) to provide leadership and management of multiple VRD bacterial vaccine programs (pre and post POC) with regard to strategy, research and development activities. In particular, the successful candidate will demonstrate a strong focus on scientific leadership of bacteriology vaccine programs and guide the core research and development teams on scientific and technical development topics. The candidate possesses the breadth of knowledge, training, and experience necessary to oversee research and development activities required for advancement of bacterial vaccines in the Company’s portfolio. The role requires leadership of multidisciplinary teams in a matrix environment and involves highly collaborative intradepartmental interactions as well interactions with other Departments within Pfizer’s WRD or Business Unit structures.

Overall, the role will require strong background in microbiology, vaccine technology, vaccine research and development with a proven track record. Incumbent will be responsible for research and developmental activities including target identification and validation (Functional studies/assays, surveillance, in vivo biology, diagnostics), epidemiology studies, Clinical Research Collaborations, endpoint identification for clinical studies, target product profile identification and strategic asset management analysis, competitive landscape analysis and opinion leader interactions, regulatory strategy and communication with regulatory and government agencies, experience in gaining and protecting company intellectual property. Incumbent will represent VRD on enterprise level initiatives. Responsibilities will be delivered through demonstrating significant influence and strong leadership capabilities.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide scientific and strategic leadership and oversight to bacterial vaccine programs with an emphasis on pre and post POC bacterial vaccine programs and collaborate closely with SVP and head of VRD.
  • Responsible for working with leadership of core R&D teams to establish specific objectives and timelines, identify key scientific issues and critically assess scientific data coming from within VRD, Pfizer and the outside.
  • Incumbent is expected to create a vision for the successful development of new vaccine programs within the area. Position carries responsibility for coordination of research and developmental activities to secure the seamless and successful development of vaccine programs.
  • Management of Sr/Director level scientists (guidance and career development for staff members, performance appraisals, objective setting and developmental plan meetings, guidance to managers regarding performance management
  • Incumbent will be involved in the development and commercialization of vaccines, serve on Asset teams and associated subcommittees: PSC, MSC ESC to understand, guide and have input in all aspects of a post POC development program, to include clinical, regulatory, bioprocess, medical and commercial.
  • Conceptualize and implement operational processes to maximize and optimize Pfizer resources
  • Stay current on external scientific, industry trends, stakeholder initiatives, and competitor actions to help align strategic objectives of the Vaccine Programs and in relevant infectious diseases.
  • Stay current on the scientific understanding, development and emerging data within the Vaccine Programs to identify and raise awareness to the SVP and Head of VRD of critical emerging issues & challenges particularly pertaining to aspects of a Scientific, Technical and overall Strategic nature applicable to bacteriology R&D programs.
  • Support the SVP in the development, evaluation and implementation of strategies and initiatives that drive growth in the VRD portfolio.
  • Lead /establish strategic direction, including vision, mission, strategies and interdependencies with other Pfizer units and the external environment to maximize opportunities in the infectious disease area.
  • Lead and contribute to enterprise level initiatives within WRD.
  • Satisfactorily completes all cGMP/GLP and safety training in conformance with VRD/Pfizer’s requirements. Where applicable, performs job responsibilities in compliance with cGMP/GLP and all other regulatory agency requirements.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Technical Skills Requirements

The incumbent will be expected to design and execute innovative vaccine R&D plans including:

  • At least 15 years of experience in bacterial vaccine-related programs and medical/scientific activities
  • Phd, MD/PhD or equivalent experience
  • Design strategies for evaluation and development of novel vaccines
  • Design approaches to analyze and characterize vaccine candidates
  • Design strategies that solve difficult technical problems related to vaccine development
  • Design strategies to improve procedures for the purpose of meeting compliance standards
  • Drive regulatory strategy for the early programs and design approaches that will help answer questions from regulatory agencies.
  • Design research strategies to answer clinical question
  • Design strategies for patent protection and defence
  • Plan and execute collaborative R&D projects with major stakeholders in VRD, WRD and VOC
  • The incumbent is a team player. Establishes positive peer relationships which further collaboration and cooperation.
  • Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact .
