We are currently searching for a Small Animal Biologist to independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Cancer Institute, Center for Cancer Research.  The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services. This opportunity is full-time, and it is on site in Bethesda, MD.

 

 

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assume primary responsibility for mouse-colony care, including genotyping, breeding, and back-crossing
  • Perform mouse procedures including intravenous tail injection and intraperitoneal injection
  • Perform mouse oral gavage for drug delivery
  • Prepare drugs for injection or gavage into mouse models
  • Prepare modified cells for injection into mouse models
  • Perform or be willing to learn mouse surgical procedures including renal capsule injection and imaging procedures such as ultrasound imaging
  • Harvest mouse patient-derived-xenograft (PDX) or genetically-engineered-model (GEM) tissues for viable preservation or direct analysis
  • Culture and genetically engineer primary and immortalized mouse and human cells.
  • Isolate DNA, RNA, and protein
  • Perform qPCR and immunoblot analyses
  • Make reagents of common use for the laboratory
  • Organize the long-term storage of viably preserved PDX and GEM tissues and maintain the lab database of these reagents
  • Prepare reports and summaries based on results and findings
  • Collect data in laboratory notebooks and databases; analyze and interpret data
  • Organize and catalog lab reagents and equipment
  • Work with staff on submitting requests for the procurement of lab supplies and maintaining common cell lines
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and care contracts
  • Attend laboratory meetings, presenting findings and results to staff
  • Work with staff on the preparation of NCI ACUC amendments and renewal forms
  • Perform flow cytometry analyses

Requirements

 

Qualifications:

  • BS in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, Biochemistry, or a relevant discipline
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related experience

 

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • In-depth understanding of scientific research, organizational structure, and laboratory resources
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills
