POSITION SUMMARY

The External Supply Operations Lead (Climate & Sustainability) is accountable and responsible for developing and leading execution of PGS External Supply’s programme on Climate and Environmental Sustainability in accordance with Pfizer’s strategy and bold move commitments to decarbonise our value chains and to reduce External Supply’s contribution to Greenhouse Gas emissions via the Contract Manufacture Organizations with whom we partner. By establishing and leading a program management approach, the External Supply Operations Lead (Climate & Sustainability) will partner with existing External Supply (ES) and Global Environmental Health & Safety (GEHS) governance, systems and processes to catalyse our Contract Manufacturing Organisations (CMO) to action on delivering Pfizer’s ambitious Greenhouse Gas emission reduction targets across value chains managed globally by ES.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The ES Operations Lead (Climate & Sustainability) is accountable and responsible for developing and leading execution of PGS External Supply’s programme on Climate and Environmental Sustainability in accordance with Pfizer’s strategy and bold move commitments to decarbonise our value chains. The ES Operations Lead (Climate & Sustainability) will fulfil the following responsibilities:

  • Become the subject-matter-expert on all aspects of Climate and Environmental Sustainability as it relates to ES business practice and ES strategy. This includes application within ES of Pfizer’s enterprise-led Climate and Environmental Sustainability program initiatives; also knowledge and awareness of Scope 3 policy, legislation, global targets, industry best practices, competitive intelligence related to ES business practice.
  • Establish and lead a team of colleagues from EHS, Sourcing & Enterprise Services, Network Design & Performance, Global Technology & Engineering and other functions to design all aspects of External Supply’s Climate Action programme. This programme will include:
    • Driving adoption of science-based targets for overall carbon emission reductions across all ES managed value-chains which are in-line with Pfizer’s commitments and ambitions
    • Identifying opportunities and leverage through which ES can drive climate action and greenhouse gas reduction at our CMOs
    • Establishing processes and methodologies to effectively engage with CMOs and increase their awareness of their climate responsibilities and the potential business advantages that will accrue (e.g., energy savings, waste reduction, physical risk management and reputational benefits for future growth)
    • plans for incentivising and/or challenging CMOs in order for them to develop and implement their own Climate and Sustainability programmes and commitments
    • Working with EHS to adopt methodologies and tools for gathering qualitative and quantitative data on current carbon emissions at CMOs. Also mechanisms for tracking commitments and progress on decarbonisation at CMOs.
    • identification of opportunities through which ES can practically support and drive commitment at our CMOs to action on climate that will deliver quantifiable emission reductions at their sites and Pfizer products (e.g., establishing methods by which Pfizer’s portion of GHG emissions can be established and tracked).
  • The External Supply Operations Lead (Climate & Sustainability) will lead on execution of the above ES climate programme. As Programme Manager, she or he will work with functions and Virtual Site Operating Teams (VSOT) across all ES Business Units to implement all aspects of the programme and deliver tangible reductions on greenhouse gas emissions. VSOTs remain accountable for CMO performance, including Climate & Sustainability. This role will support the VSOT by increasing awareness within teams on Climate & Sustainability and specific expectations
  • Setting the program objectives & delivering the ES Climate Action plan with the respective ES business unit leaders and GEHS, ensuring stakeholders are identified and engaged. She or he will provide a high level of program management oversight.
  • Leads all metrics and reporting requirements for the complex program that includes tracking and measuring progress, independently addressing technical & business actionable shortfalls with subject matter experts and CMOs and coordinating escalations through established business processes e.g., IMEX if resolution is not identified
  • Monitor and track progress and make recommendations on interventions or alternative strategies at CMOs
  • By year 2025, agreed actionable plans will be in place. Greenhouse Gas emission reduction targets will be in place for a significant portion of ES managed CMOs, and Greenhouse Gas emission reduction projects will have commenced and/or planned for a significant portion of the ES portfolio (2025 target yet to be determined).
  • Coordinate with GEHS and any supporting 3rd Parties supporting CMO baseline energy assessments and Greenhouse gas reduction target setting. Utilize spend data and sector Greenhouse gas intensity factors to prioritize engagement and activities with CMOs which will have the greatest environmental benefit.
  • Work closely with and represent ES on the Pfizer Enterprise Climate and Environmental programme which is working with all of Pfizer suppliers.
  • Leverage common supplier relationships between PharmSci, PGS internal sites and ES to amplify engagement and ensure one Pfizer approach.
  • Partner with SE&S and GEHS to ensure ES performance metrics - aligned with Scope 3 maturity Model - are inputted into the enterprise tracking system to support public reporting.
  • Leverages and engages with multiple communication platforms and techniques to ensure stakeholders understand Climate and Environmental Sustainability priorities. This includes driving awareness of challenges and issues across multiple layers of T3/T4/T5 stakeholders.
  • Ensuring an open effective communication environment for internal and external partner stakeholders that include ES Operations Leads, PGS Subject Matter Experts and CMO stakeholders as required to ensure timeline and metric adherence.
  • Develops and leverages resources to implement innovative ideas and processes in order to drive successful outcomes on climate action and to achieve or accelerate critical milestones. This includes gathering innovative and competitive intelligence on best practices on environmental sustainability and sharing such learnings thereby enabling continuous improvement. Promote and recognize best practices observed at CMOs and including Scope 3 management as observed with peer organizations e.g., via the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative (PSCI). Drives business process enhancement, problem solving etc leveraging operational excellence principles

Qualifications

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Minimum 10+ years related professional experience at a senior level
    • Minimum Bachelor’s degree (Engineering, Science, Technical, Business) or related discipline
    • Pharmaceutical Operations, Technical, Supply Chain, EH&S and/or Quality experience
    • Experience in operations with CMOs or external suppliers
    • Experience in projects that require collaborative approaches; strong analytical skills; ability to understand business issues and processes
    • Languages: Fluency in English

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Ideally formal Project Management training (e.g. Certified PMP or Operational Excellence)
    • Demonstrated experience leading Environmental sustainability and climate programs
    • Knowledge and understanding of pharmaceutical manufacturing processes and regulatory requirements. Also strong business acumen with manufacturing experiences preferred
    • Demonstrated ability to participate in teams and communicating at all levels of management
    • Ability to work autonomously and be a self-starter. Must have expert knowledge in MS Office Suite (i.e., PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook)
    • Well-developed interpersonal skills including leadership, integrity, flexibility, and creativity
    • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and changing environment, adaptable
    • Comprehensive knowledge of a broad range of Project Management or Operational Excellence methodologies / programs
    • Ability to define, evaluate and recommend improvement opportunities
    • Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization
