PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Reporting into the North America Head of Finance – based in Emeryville – the Director, Commercial Financial Planning & Analysis is responsible for providing leadership and oversight of a wide range of the Santen North America regional business including revenue, gross margin and all related operating expenses.  They will serve as an integral business partner and resource to the region, providing overall financial leadership and guidance, including ensuring the integrity, consistency, and transparency of reported and forecasted financial information, supporting the decision-making process by providing insightful analyses and strategic guidance. They will also be responsible for integrating corporate objectives into the region’s plans and goals, ensuring compliance with financial controls and guidelines, continuously seeking ways to improve policies, procedures, and processes.  

This position is responsible for developing and promoting strong relationships between the commercial team and other functional areas. Additional responsibilities include preparing and presenting monthly and quarterly management reports for internal and external purposes and leading strategic cross-functional projects (including implementation of new systems).  In addition, they are responsible for constantly advancing and developing Finance systems, tools and processes to support the FP&A group. They will manage short- and long-term corporate planning processes within Santen, including to support the Head of the Canadian business as well as all Emeryville based functional heads in the Healthcare and Corporate Group.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND KEY DELIVERABLES:

  • Lead and coordinate the development of all corporate financial planning including quarterly forecasts, annual budget, and 3-5 years Strategic Plan
  • Lead and direct all aspects of Revenue, Gross-to-net and regional commercial operating expense modeling supporting the planning process to then communicate with findings to Executive Management and Senior Leadership
  • Provide strategic guidance and direction on projects to regional senior leadership 
  • Responsible for FP&A for all non-R&D functions. Work with operating departments including Functional VPs to develop and prepare plans
  • Consolidates R&D financials into the overall Santen Inc. financial planning and reporting systems
  • Manage overall US and Canada planning timetable providing work direction to R&D Finance regarding timeframes and deliverables for Santen Inc. data consolidation of planning and reporting efforts
  • Develop accurate product costing by partnering with the commercial business and global Santen colleagues
  • Manage the product P&Ls and identify opportunities to optimize financial results
  • Lead strategic analysis and interpretation of financial results and business plans
  • Act as subject matter expert, leads and project manages implementation of new corporate financial reporting and planning tools; maintain tool for Santen Incorporated to provide fast, reliable and informative data for management decision-making
  • Provide detailed MTD, QTD, and YTD financial analysis, management reporting, and financial summaries for both internal and external purposes
  • Manage the day-to-day activities of multiple areas in complex SG&A contracts process supporting contract activities for all non-R&D departments
  • Manage and communicate commercial financial contract accruals for month-end-close
  • Lead monthly budget review meetings within regional commercial teams; significantly contribute to manage actual spend to agreed budgets and forecasts
  • Significantly contribute to improvements of systems and/or process in coordination with Global Finance where applicable
  • Perform other duties as necessary as assigned by management
  • Build financial models to support product launches
  • Develop forward looking reporting to drive decision making

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 10 years related experience; at least 3 years’ of management and Pharmaceutical or Biotech industries experience. Commercial experience with launching of new products is a plus
  • Experience of leading strategic planning processes, in the Pharmaceutical or Biotech industries preferred
  • Pharmaceutical background in clinical finance role preferred, in addition to commercial experience
  • Experience leading successful new financial planning and analyses system implementation; including business process documentation, system requirements/configuration along with training and end user support
  • Ability to work in global diverse environment and resolve complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors
  • Ability to exercise judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with non-financial managers and all levels of personnel and management to senior executive level
  • Requires strong background in budgeting and forecasting, financial analysis and modeling including consolidation of financial forecasts
  • Advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and application of business planning and analysis techniques
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills; energetic, flexible team player with ability to work in a changing environment
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software in a Windows environment; high level of proficiency in Excel is required
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively across functions
