Summary of the Position

The New Ventures Team has as its primary objective to optimize the benefit that USP obtains from its strategic investments, via a combination of business development (partnerships & acquisitions), strategic sourcing, program development of strategic initiatives, and collaboration with organizational owners on important initiatives. The New Ventures Program Manager is a member of this Team.  

Within this role, the New Ventures Manager will be: 

• Supporting and participating in partnership conception, design and pursuit, and acquisitions (targeting, acquisition process, due diligence), combining individual development work with collaboration with other New Ventures team members and leaders in the organization. 

• Collaborating with an extended team and stakeholders across the organization according to the needs of specific initiatives. This will include assisting in the definition/refinement of scope, definition/validation of a value proposition, financial modeling, benefits sharing analysis, operational planning and resourcing, launch planning, and risk analysis 

• Working with New Ventures and broad Strategy leadership (Enterprise strategy, Insights, Pricing and Analytics) to assist organization leaders on planning, executing and managing initiatives that are part of the New Ventures scope 

• Developing and maintaining relationships with USP initiatives teams focused on helping teams to strategize and plan optimally, and to assist teams to achieve value realization objectives, particularly around adhering to the intended strategic approach 

• Liaising with Finance, Legal, Strategy and Portfolio Management/Governance on development and performance of key initiatives

Key partners of the New Ventures Group that the New Ventures Manager may interface with include: 

• The leadership and key staff of the Performance Cells 

• The Business Development Council 

• Portfolio Management and Governance and Eval Group 

• The Enterprise Strategy group, which is responsible for defining overall strategy for the organization 

• Legal and Finance 

• Marketing and Regional leadership/staff 

• External service providers (consultants, investment bankers) 

• Leaders of key initiatives 

Roles 

• Partnerships and Acquisitions:  Collaborative opportunity identification, prioritization; Value proposition development USP and potential collaborators; Contextual and relevant fact-base development to support insightful senior leadership decision-making; External relationship cultivation, assessment of potential collaborators 

• Strategic Sourcing Work with New Ventures leadership, Performance Cell leadership and the Procurement group to find optimal value in our materials and services acquisition; Find valuable and motivated potential partners for USP  

• Leadership: Responsible for supporting achievement of NV selected objectives; Provide a critical view of what is needed to be successful for launch teams, and working with teams to drive those views to decisions, working with NV and USP leadership

• Business Development  Economic value definitions and benefit sharing approaches for contracts focused on external collaboration situations, and valuation for acquisitions; Liaise with Finance and Legal on initiative development and contracting development 

• Business Model Shaping and Financial Modeling:  Create financial models that are constructed in alignment with a specific business model (levers/drivers built into the model); Transfer those models and the underlying principles to the initiative owners, support owners as they execute, adhere to the intended business model principles 

• Project Management: Work with stakeholders on planning and execution against projects within the Ventures portfolio 

• Entrepreneurship: Initiate and drive development of business propositions, externally focused 

• Performance Cell Collaboration: Work with the Performance Cells on defining launch teams, and managing for success (in partnership with the Portfolio Management and Governance and Eval Group 

Basic Qualifications

Manager

  • • Bachelors degree
  • • Five (5) years experience in Life Science, Chemicals or Materials, Biological Sciences, planning and executing projects that include stakeholders of multiple departments
  • • Equivalent education / experience will be considered

Senior Manager

  • Bachelors degree
  • Eight (8) years experience in Life Science, Chemicals or Materials, Biological Sciences, planning and executing projects that include stakeholders of multiple departments
  • Equivalent education / experience will be considered

Skills Sought

• Exposure to business environment (e.g., finance, business development, production/operations, business processes, and consulting projects in these areas)  

• Evidence of broad problem-solving effectiveness (has successfully learned and applied learning in new areas multiple times) 

• Effective partnering with initiative teams 

Preferred Qualifications

• Relationship building and collaboration skills across diverse and matrixed stakeholders and customers in technical environment.

• Ability to surface, prioritize, and balance multiple stakeholder priorities.

• Strong project management skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously. 

• Excellent problem solving and analytical skills, including experience leveraging data to inform decision making and independently solving software engineering problems.

• Expertise in strategic thinking and strong business acumen.

• Strong experience in understanding business partner and client needs. 

• Demonstrated success in defining and building products.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information in a condensed manner to various stakeholders verbally and in writing.

• Ability to operate independently where appropriate, yet understands when to escalate issues and how to establish effective working relationships in a team setting

• Business acumen, insight into organization drivers of financial performance (internal and external), sensitivity to external collaborator/customer preferences 

• Adept at working in a matrix organization 

• Experience with planning, tracking and performance management of programs/ initiatives 

• Experience in planning, executing, and managing projects that include multiple departments 

• Experienced and effective in recognizing need for change, and working with others to drive change
