We are currently searching for a Research Animal Imaging Technologist to perform computer-based PET/CT procedures in experimental animals including mice, rats and marmosets; operating computer and laboratory equipment; participating in the planning of and performing research studies; ordering and maintaining the necessary supplies for laboratory imaging use; demonstrating the proper use and methods associated with PET and PET/CT scanners and associated software and ancillary PET laboratory equipment to research scientists, and fellows; and developing new methods and procedures or substantially modifying existing guidelines to resolve technical problems.  This opportunity is full-time, and it is on site in Bethesda, MD.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Administer radiopharmaceuticals to experimental animals; position and monitor animals to obtain accurate scans; recognize changes in specific situations that require modification of standard operating procedures to obtain adequate PET and PET/CT studies with data that yield useful information
  • Perform advanced, small animal PET/CT imaging using PET/CT procedures in experimental animals that include performing daily, weekly, and monthly calibration of the microPET/microCT; handling and placing animals in the scanner; dosing the animals with PET radiopharmaceuticals
  • Operate computer software on a specialized small animal PET and PET/CT scanner/computer systems including image acquisition, attenuation correction, image reconstruction and display, region of interest analysis, production of metabolic images, data transfer and archiving, and scanner calibration
  • Perform animal preparation including anesthesia, injection catheters and physiological monitoring
  • Handle experimental animals including tail vein injections, administration of anesthesia and monitoring of animal vital signs. Additional skills including performing ex-vivo and in vitro autoradiography and cryostat of hot tissues
  • Handle, dissect and euthanize animals
  • Perform analysis of animal tissues; prepare frozen slices and paraffin sections, appropriately stained to demonstrate normal and abnormal structures
  • Update and maintain laboratory notebooks and databases; collect, analyze, and interpret data
  • Collect, organize, and record experimental data for publication and future reference by others
  • Perform computer analysis and use computer software to prepare images
  • Document information on procedures, modifications, and methods for input into final publication and presentations of findings at meetings

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacology, Physiology, Nuclear, Industrial Radiology, Biological Technologies, or related discipline
  • At least 1-2 years of experience
  • Knowledge of radiopharmaceutical practice including calculating and drawing doses, maintaining relevant records, and performing quality control procedures to assure safe administration of radiopharmaceuticals to comply with regulatory standards (e.g., of the animal care and use rules)
  • Knowledge of computers including an understanding of computer hardware, knowledge of a variety of operating systems, and a knowledge of scanner operation programs that are developed by manufacturers or that are locally produced
