Reporting to the Vice President of FP&A, the Executive Director, Technical Operations (TOPS) Finance, will be the head of finance supporting BioMarin's TOPS organization. This individual will be responsible for overseeing manufacturing accounting, financial plant controllership for BMRN's manufacturing plants / CMO relationships, finance manufacturing process design related to a new ERP implementation, and leading TOPS FP&A globally. In addition, the role will serve as a critical business partner to the TOPS leadership and associated leadership teams to help develop the overall strategy within the TOPS organization holistically through outstanding financial analysis, business management, and strategic thinking. This critical role will have four direct reports based in various locations throughout the globe, with the overall management of a team of 15+.  

Key Responsibilities:

 Manufacturing Accounting Ownership:  Financial ownership of all aspects of COGS, Gross Margin, Capital, R&D expense (as it relates to TOPS), and inventory, including core accounting. This role will oversee all elements of manufacturing accounting and lead manufacturing site controllership while coordinating with the Global Accounting team to meet financial reporting timelines, accuracy, and other requirements. Key aspects of this role include ongoing management and expertise of critical GAAP and Non-GAAP accounting principles with responsibilities for reporting Global inventory, manufacturing accounting, and inventory reserve accounting under US and local GAAP policies, along with contributions to departmental policies to ensure proper accounting treatment, particularly related to purchase orders, contracts, and expense recognition.  

 Financial Planning & Analysis:  Own the development of TOPS financial planning, including quarterly forecasts, annual budget, monthly performance management, and 3-5 years Long Range Plan, while helping to drive the overall execution of the organizational plans and priorities. This role will help provide leadership to develop, maintain, and refine management reporting for headcount, expense, and capital expenditures, linking business drivers to variances monthly, quarterly, and annual performance. In addition, contribute to the overall corporate FP&A transformation efforts, representing Technical Operations on key process-related changes and insights. Ongoing ownership of capital governance process and executive leader for critical approvals.   

 Strategy Leadership & Decision Support:  Drive robust financial analytics and business insights on key strategic decisions within the TOPS organization to help further enhance business activities and results. Own all strategic modeling for forecasts and effectively communicate findings to TOPS Leadership Team, CFO, and Finance partners. Provide financial support and leadership to achieve BOOST / Operational excellence targets while managing/developing core metrics to track progress on these goals to drive COGS improvements, including complex network optimization efforts to help drive continued cost & efficiency opportunities. 

 Business Partnership & Collaboration:  Partner with the TOPS leadership team, including the head of TOPS, as a strategic business leader to help drive overall strategy for the organization. Build strong relationships with functional leadership and maintain joint accountability with the business for the accuracy of financial plans. This role will collaborate heavily with cross-functional executive TOPS leadership and BMRN's Sr. Executive team. Developing and maintaining trusted, productive, and collegial relationships is a key attribute of this role.  

 Finance, ERP, and Process Transformation & Ownership: Help lead process transformation efforts with ongoing support and leadership to a new ERP implementation expected to commence in 2022. 

This role will play a critical part in the ERP efforts, general process redesign, and play a key leadership role in helping shape the future of TOPS financial and process management. Essential process transformation and ownership examples will include standard costing implementation, capital governance management, E&O considerations, financial evaluation of the S&OP, and make vs. buy assessments.   

 Organization and Team Leadership: Day-to-day leadership, mentorship, and coaching of 4 direct reports and a team of over 15 high-performing individuals. This role will recruit, retain, develop, motivate and cultivate a productive team committed to demonstrating BioMarin's core values and professional standards. Team effectiveness is a key goal through relationship building, training, mentoring, professional development, and career planning for the team.

 Experience Desired:

  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships at all levels. 
  • 12+ years of experience in accounting and finance preferably within a biotech environment (strongly preferred)
  • Strong organizational and people skills, and an ability to work both autonomously and as a team member in a fast-paced environment 
  • Strong communication skills including ability to present and communicate effectively at senior executive management level meetings
  • Strong analytical skills, high attention to detail and excellent problem-solving ability
  • Demonstrated ability to frame and execute analyses and synthesize recommendations 
  • Sound judgment, problem solving, and collaboration in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions to problems and ability to effectively influence business partners and decisions to the benefit of the company 
  • People management experience required with a preference for managing people in a matrixed work environment 
  • Experience building a standard costing environment in a new ERP system and general experience to ERP implementations

Education

  • Bachelor’s in Finance, Accounting, Economics or Business
  • Advanced Degree, CPA, or MBA strongly preferred
