Manager: Bioinformatics Engineer III
Department: Design and Technology
Location: Richmond/Hybrid role

Sangamo Therapeutics is a genomic medicine company building value with cutting-edge work across four distinct but complementary technology platforms – gene therapy, cell therapy, in vivo genome editing, and in vivo genome regulation. Using its deep scientific expertise and proprietary zinc finger genome engineering technology, Sangamo is working to create genomic cures for patients suffering from severe genetic diseases for which today’s medicines can only treat symptoms. At Sangamo, we are passionate about transforming lives by building a robust, sustainable, differentiated, innovative, and high value genomic medicine pipeline that addresses patients with life-limiting conditions. Sangamo takes pride in being the first to edit endogenous human genes, first to treat patients with gene edited T cells, and first to treat patients with in vivo genome editing. Our top priority is to meet the needs of patients with commitment and compassion. Along with our commitment to science and to our patients, we also endeavor to create an inclusive environment that promotes and values diversity. Sangamo is a company where individuals can flourish, grow and develop their expertise.

We are seeking top talent to join our mission. Let’s build a better future together.

JOB SUMMARY:

Sangamo Therapeutics is seeking a Scientist with experience in using gene editing and gene regulation technologies to target human diseases.  The candidate will design approaches for targeting specific loci with various biochemical or transcriptional activities to alter gene expression or add new cassettes to a genome.  This is a dry lab informatics position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Work with disease experts and Project Managers to figure out ideal approaches for new therapeutic targets
  • Carefully assess genomic context of disease associated regions for ease of targeting and robustness of annotation data (e.g. isoform abundance, regulatory regions, tissue specificity)
  • Use ancillary databases and literature searches to increase confidence in targeting strategies
  • Suggest and help design experiments to address gaps in current knowledge that are critical for the project

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ph.D. (or M.Sc. with equivalent industry experience) in mammalian genetics, gene editing, stem cell biology, epigenetics, bioinformatics, or other disciplines dealing with entire genomes
  • Must be familiar with genome browsers, associated tools and databases
  • Expertise in mammalian gene structure
  • Must have a good knowledge of mammalian gene structure, exception cases, and limits of existing knowledge
  • Good communication/documentation skills, and willingness to follow and improve established processes
  • Familiarity with command-line tools and Linux

OTHER DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in designing reagents which target large numbers of mammalian genome locations (e.g. CRISPR/Cas9, CRISPRi, CRISPRa, RNAi, antisense oligo, Cre recombinase screens) with informative controls
  • Knowledge of population genetics in humans, other primates, and rodent models
  • Exposure to high-throughput screening concepts, limitations, and artifacts
  • Expertise in mammalian transgene design for AAV or lentiviral vectors, especially combinatorial libraries and pooled screening
  • Familiarity with gene synthesis assembly principles and limitations
  • Solid understanding of NGS principles
  • Statistical knowledge of multiple testing correction and nonparametric methods
  • Knowledge of a scripting/statistical language (bash, python, R, ruby, etc.) and ability to use command-line Linux genomics tools
  • Familiarity with SQL and database queries
